Paris, December 5. Though the Paris "Journal" states that the Government does not intend to appoint a successor to General Joffre to take direct command on the AVeat front, several newspapers assert that a successor has already been, chosen, and that he will act in close collaboration with General Joffre. In some quarters General Castlenau is mentioned,
General Joffre (it was stated yesterday) is to be Commander-in-Cliicf of the French armies in the Balkans as well as on the West front. ANOTHER FURTIVE SCHEME LAID BARE GERMAN TRICKS WITH BRITISH . Priestly, a commission agent, has been sentenced to four months' imprisonment for attempting to trade in war material without a permit. Letters which had been intercepted indicated that the prisoner was attempting to push the sale of one or two mulion Mauser rifles. Other documents related to 5000 tons, of picric acid and a million Mausers. Included in the documents were the plans of mines, bombs, aeroplanes, and airshipß. Mr. Bodkin, K.C., prosecuting for the Treasury, said on behalf of the War Office that German agents in America were putting people forward to contract for the supply or munitions to the Allies, i knowing that they would be unable to supply the goods. The importance of the scheme could not be exaggerated.
