' — . . ! The Thorndon Amateur Swimming • Club oponed its season very quietly on Saturday afternoon at the Thorndon baths. Two events wore got off, tho 'lirst being a- 50yds. handicap for men who are in training at Trentliam Camp. Both events were most interesting, and although the boys' race was won somewhat easily, the final of the soldiers' race was most exciting. An entrance sheet : had beeu posted up at the camp, ; and in consequence thereof a meeting ; of swimmers was called, with the gratifying result that a Camp Swimming Club has been formed, there being some , very enthusiastic swimmers in oamp. Following aie the results of the raoes: — Junior Handicap.—B. Brien (22sec.), , 1: G.. M'Nish (22sec.), 2; J. Garrett (22scc.), 3. Also started:'o. ll; Dudson (2bcc.), H. J. Dudson .(3sec.), B. , Hughes (7see.). The scrafcli man swam well, but could not catcli those of the limit mark. 'Soldiers' " Handicap.—First heat: | Cooper (6seo.), 1; Hicks (3sec.), 2; Brown (Tscc.), 3. Also started: Linden . (2sec.), Taylor (9scc.), Goodwin (lOsec.), Burgess (lGscc.). Won by about a yard. Time, 33scc. Second heat: Limbrick (9sec.), 1; Forth (6scc.), 2; Carlton (sscc.), 3. Also started: Cunimerfield (4scc.), Stohr (6scc.), Brown (Usee.), ' Phillips (Usee.),: Macferson. (16sec.). Won easily. Time, Slsee. Final: Cooper (fisec.), 1; Limbrick (9scc.), 2; Forth (6sec.), 3. Also started: Carlton (osec.), Hicks (3sec.). Won by a touch, after a splendid race., tho winner boing heartily cnllgi'dtulnicd bj- hia gmuil mates.
