OPENING OF THE SEASON N —■ i— . SPOILT BY BOUGH WEATHER. The rowing season was opened on Saturday atternoon. Tlio combined effects of the war (which Jias mado very cons'deraWe ...roads upon the membership rolls of the clubs) and a blustering inhospitable day robbed what in past years was a gay and interesting function of much of its pleasure, '''ho turbulent sea made it quite impossible to launch the frail racing craft, and ns a consequence the usual competitive programme had to bo abandoned. In a short speech prior to formally' opening the sea sou, the Hon. Sir Francis Bell eulogised the sportiof rowing, which he said was quite free from sordid associations. It hardened up the bone and muscle ; of men, and would, ho thought, assist in fitting us as a- maritime people to earn our place in the Pacifip, even as the Mother Country had earned her prestige in the other hemisphere. Naturally at a ,time like this,' said the speaker tho clubs were down,- but he saw do reason for down-heartedness, and he hoped that when their comrades returned from the front the association would be blessed with good luck, and— better weather. The teams from Trcntham eamp which were to have competed in the afternoon events are as follow, each man's club being given in parentheses: Officers.—Lieut. Skelly (Star), str.; Lieut. No. 2 team: Gunner Parrant (Petone), str.: Gunner (North Shore), 3; Corpl, Newsham (Aramoho), 2; Gunner Cairns (Picton), bow. '10th Infantry.—Sergt. Opportunity was taken to present the certificates won at tho Wellington Association's regatta held at the end of February last. ,j ■ Mr. A. S. Bisß, vice-president, stated that the money that would ordinarily have been devoted to the prizeshad been given to the war fund, and certificates would be awarded instead.
