POULTRY INDUSTRY
(Br Chantecler.) Notes for the Novice. Protrusion' of the oviduct, or egg sac, is frequently noted in the poultry yard, aud, usually with old hens. It is caused by the straining to expel large eggs. To effect a cure the organ should be washed with warm water, oiled, and with the finger gently returned, keeping the hen's head downward in order to assist the operation. After this' a dose' of castor oil is recommended—about, a half-tea-spoonful for a grown bird. As a usual tiling no further treatment is required. If you find that tho eggs laid by your hens have a stale, musty flavour, you should look to the food, and take care ( that only clean, sound tucker is provided. Should tho rank flavour persist it may be due to disease—probably cloacitis or vent gleet—and in this case the cure is to kill tho bird and burn the body. Tlie most common cure l'or egg-eating is to fill an eggshell with mustard and pepper, and place it in the run. I don't liko any of these cures myself,. believing that tho proper thing is to kill tile offenders, aud thus to remove tho cause, and have done with the thing. A clot of blood in an egg is usually tho result of over stimulation, due to tho generous feeding, condiments, or irritant in the diet. The blood conies from ruptured blood vessels. When found in tiie white it is_due to rupture in the oviduct, and when in the yolk to a rupture in tho ovarium. The cure is to reduce the stimulating food—too much meat is generally tho cause—and to give Epsom salts at the rate of a packet to from 15 to 20' birds 6nce -a week, dissolved, and added to the mash. When a fowl is observed to frequently extend its , neck, tho probable ennso is indigestion, and the stretching is done m- order to remove tho pressure of the load ot indigested food. The cure' is to cut down the quantity of food supplied, green stuff." ° pUnty ° f °' OTcis6 I >»' 1 N.Z. UTILITY POULTRY CLUB'S COMPETITIONS.
