N.Z. PATRIOTIC FUNDS
MISAPPREHENSIONS REMOVED WAR :relief association INCORPORATED There are evidently still some misapprehensior:s in ccrtain quarters regarding the pDsition of the patriotic funds collected through the medium of tho New Zealand Patriotic Society in the recent carnival. It will be remembered that only on November 4 last a meeting was held :n the Mayor's room, presided over by Mr. J. P. Luke, when the Patriotic Society's, and the Mayor's Funds for the relief of wounded soldiers and sailors and their dependents, and for tho treatment of soldiers through the St. John Ambulance Association and the St. J 31111 Ambulance Overseas Brigade, were merged under a body entitled the War Belief Association. Elaborate regulations had been drafted by Messrs. Leonard Tripp and C. P. Skerrett, and wero, after seme trifling alterations had been made, approved by the meetiig. •An executive committee and trustees were appointed, and everything was done in proper order. When consulted yesterday, Mr. Tripp stated that after the November meeting it becamo necessary to incorporate the new association under tho War Funds Act, and steps to that end wore taken by submitting the regulations to the Government. Those regulations had been carefully perused by the Crown Law officers, and after-a. few little alterations had been made, which improved them, had been approved by the Governor-in-Council, and had been duly gazetted, which left tho way open for the- executive to operate on tho funds us deserving cases presented themselves.- To that end if. was proposed to «all a meet, ing for ne:rt Tuesday or Wednesday, to arrange details in connection with the necessary inquiry into cases, for tho establishment of the bona-fide of applicants, and their title to assistance from the funds.
'.Mr, ; Tripp said that the • Executive Committee appointed at the meeting of the W£,r Relief Association consists of the following gentlemen: Messrs. A. R. Atkinson, E. J. Colley, 0. A Ewen, W. Ferguson, H. G. Hill,- J. Hutcheson, J. Lewis. C. M. Luke, S. Kirkcaldie, A. Macintosh, D. : M'Laren, P. W. Manton, L. M. A. RtaMon, L. 0. H. Tripp, and G. Shirtchffe. Tim trustees appointed were Messrs. J. P. Luke and the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, M.L.C. - ' ' ' Mr. Tnpp further, said that th® charge that the moneys collected by the Patriotic. Society had . been tied up was not altogether a correct one, as the committee had been able to afford financial assistance in some cases from their funds through the simple expedient of getting tlho. permission of certain donors of substantial amounts to agree to that _ procedure. In, other respects it.was right and proper that the funds' should be safeguarded until placed undeT contro'i in a formal and legal manner. As to tie position of the funds, misrepresentation had been made. The treasurer jf tlie New Zealand Patriotic Society (Mr. Jas. M'lntosh) stated yesterday, that the accounts in connection wr.tli the recent carnival had been sent oil to Mr. E. Hunt fqr audit last Friday evening, and that ctentleman did not anticipate getting through his somewhat arduous task until Monday or Tuesday next. In the meantime tlio funds stood, approximately, as follow :— ■ ■ ' £■ ' £ To credit lI.Z. Otherwise the'society -was still concerned in the disposal of tickets in the Maraetai land shares art uniou, and also in the disposal by art union of Mrs.- Stratford's beautiful painting '/In Time of Peril," now on view in tho Bristol Piano Company's i>remises. As.soon as the auditor's statement was; ready, it would, with the statement of accounts, bo mado avail-able-to tho Press. The Gazette notice approving tie incorporation of the War Relief. Association of "Wellington reads' as follows:— Whereas by Section 12 of the War Funds Act, 1915 (hereinafter referred to as "tho said Act"),, it is provided that the Governor may, by Order-in-Council gazetted, incorporate a society possessing, a war fund, or. tho, trustees of such fund: And whereas application in writing addressed to the Minister has been made by the War Relief Association of Wellington (being a society possessing a >var fund), praying .for the incorporation of that association: And whereas it is considered desirable to grant such application:, Now,- therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the fower and authority .vested in him bj the said Act, and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth liere■by order'itnd declare that the. association known as the War' Relief Association of Wellington is hereby incorporated for the purposes of the said Act as 'fromVthe publication hereof in the "New ■Zealand Gazette," and shall be known as the "War Relief Association of Wellington."-
