ST. JOHN AMBULANCE AND RED CROSS SOCIETY
COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The commitee which is in charge of tho St. John Ambulance and Red Cross Society Depot in Nathan's Buildings desires to call attention to tho statement of receipts and payments which appears in another column. In view of the fact that public entertainments have been given in aid of the funds of the depot, that a. periodical salo of flowers lias brought in quite a- large sum, and that donations of sums ranging from half-arcro«;n to five pounds have been made to tho funds, in addition to various other contributions which aro set out in detail in the above-mentioned statement, it is considered desirable that those who have contributed so generously should have an opportunity of seeing how the moneys received at the depot are being spent. A statement will, in future, bo issued periodically, in order that the _ public may be confident that contributions are being -judiciously and expeditiously used,
The sum of £107 has been expended for flannel, £64 for pyjariia. shirting, £28 for surgical equipment, £33 for sheeting, in addition to purchases of handkerchiefs, wool, packing material, and other necessary and comforting goods. Cases of goods are received at the depot from all over the Wellington Province, . comprising clothing, bed equipment, baudages, and other things which are necessary for the comfort of the and wounded. The goods aro packed into canvas bales, which aro rendered waterproof by the use of tar paper. The bales aro three feet long, two feet wide, «nd one foot deep. Sixteen of these bales (representing two and a half tons space) are forwarded every two weeks t>y the P. and 0. and Orient S.S. Co.'s hoals to tho Hospital Base at Alexandria, the steamship companies very lcindlv carrying them free of charge. Since the beginning of August there have been dispatched from the depot 142 hales and 9 cases of goods, of the total value of approximately £1400.
It would not have been possible to keep up the regular fortnightly consignments but for t'he excellent contributions of equipment, etc.. from tho country'. districts. The whole of tho business of forwardine from here and distributing at the other end, is done in accordance with arrangements made by the Government through the UnderSecretary for Internal Affairs. In view of the fact that the boys who are returning wounded frequently go on board the boat, for New Zealand with no equippient at all (and it is recognised that it is sometimes unavoidable, in the stress of circumstances, that this should be so),, there was dispatched from this depot:by tho last transport a case of equipment, some walkingsticks, and deck chairs, all of whioh were labelled "For the use of soldiers returning sick and wonnded—not to be removed from the 1 ' . Captain Hilton, of the Defence Shipping Store, kindly added his official, intimation to the \various parcels.
■ It is honed'to "forward a much larger consignment, for the samo purpose by the next transports.
The committee would be-glad if anyone who has a deck chair or two to spare, would kindly send them to Captain Bilton, Defence' Shippina Store, "K" Shed, Waterloo Quay, or send a post-card to the hon. secretary at the depot, and ho will arrange to send for th,cm. It will be realised that a largo number is required and would undoubtedly bo much appreciated by t'lio boys who are returning sick or wounded.
. Dr, Agnes Bennett recently wrote to one of." the workers at the depot from ttio Choubbra Hospital at Cairo as follows: —"It is warm weather now, but Retting \ cry. cold• in. .tlie evenings,; and 1 am sure we shall'want:some''moderately warm dressing-gowns for our convalescents ore. long.: I tried to'get a few the other day, but got, five for some 300 patients frojtif-the' British Red Cross stores. , Well-made gyjamas for deck wear for the returnintr wounded are also urgently required.": With a view to dispatching a,consignment in response to this letter, an appeal has been made to the Patriotic Society for £250, while the;proceeds of a concert on December 11. bv the troops in , camp, will be-used in the same direction.
