ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
. KILLED BY' A TRAM. Mr. D.' G. A. Cooper, S.SL, held an inquest yesterday ; afternoon into the, circumstances connected with the death of" Donald M'Neill, a seafaring man, who was killed by a tram-car in Willis Street- on Tuesday evening. SeniorSergeant Mullaney represented the police, while.-the' City. Solicitor (Mr. J. O'Shea). appeared for the tramway au-, thorities, and Mr. P. J. O'Regan for the relatives of the, deceased. According toj the ovidence, the deceased was a single man; 23 years of age, and ■ was lin Iris usual state, of health; when seen by his brother at about' 6 p.m. ion Tuesday. An hour later, deceased'was in' Willis Street and proceeded '..to cross from the west side to' the .east side near tlie Hotel Windsor. He. passeid behind a car bound for Lambton Station, and, failing to notice another car oil the seoond set of rails, was knocked down and killed instantly. A verdict Jf accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone. Thre Coroner remarked that the motorman appeared to have acted with commendable promptitude in applying the brakes. A SECOND INQUEST. ' : The death of Gustav Diehl formed the subject) of a second , inquest, at which Serjeant Kelly represented the. police. Deceased was a married man, 61 years of age, and resided with his wife and family in Elizabeth Street. He had a son killed in action at the .Dardanelles on' October 23, and since 'then he had bf»n ailing. _ He expired suddenly after the evening meal on Monday. According, t6 Dr. H. A. Gilmer, \rhf> conducted a post-mortem examination, death was diie to pleurisy land bronchitis, and a verdict to this effect was'returned.
FALL FROM A SCAFFOLD, i ' By-. Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, December 2. An pccident befel a middle-aged man named John Agnew this afternoon. He was working on a -scaffold in Queen Street, when he fell and fractured his skull. He' was removed! to the Hospital, where he lies in a critical condition. He is married, and a carpenter ,by trade.
