LOWER HUTT COURT
Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at the Lower Hutt Court- yesterday, Messrs. J. Cudby and J. Wilkin, J.P.'s, being'also on the bench. For riding bicyclos'without lights, A. Toswill and M. Casey fined 5&. and 7s. costs. For. a like offence with a. motor-cycle, J. Barry was similarly dealt with. •
Cloko, for whom Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared; pleaded guilty to a chai;ge of driving a vehiclo. without having paid the proper license fee to the L<iwijr Hutt Borough Council. Mr. Fitzgibbon asked for a light penalty on the ground that his client did not understand the position. Mr. H. F. Ayson, wlio 'appeared for the council, stated that the matter had been made clear to defendant, who was 'accordingly fined 205., with costs 28s. W. Cameron, for driving a cart without a driver's license, was lined 10s., with 7s. costs. E. T. Ell, for driving a cart without lights, was fined 55., with 7s. costs. A defendant in a -by-law case was fined for failure to pa„y the carrier's feo under the 'heavj; traffic by-I»w. It seems that if a carrier passes ouly once through the district lie is liable for the full year's fee.
In tho case of the Inspector of Awards v. N. S. Campbell, for. failure to pay the minimum award of wages for casual work, Mr. Fitzgibbon, who appeared for defendant, asked that a morely nominal penalty be ! imposed, as_ the offence was only a technical ono. His client had paid more than the award rate, hut had failed to enter the employee's namo in the wages book. The Inspector of Awards stated that tho facts were as outlined by defendant, who was accordingly fined the nominal amount of Is.
