GREEK REPLY TO THE ENTENTE

EUROPE OBSESSED BY THE BALKAN TANGLE

CRISIS IN RUMANIA

SERBIANS ABANDON .. MONASTER ' i EMPTY HUSK FOR THE ENEMY NORTHCLIFFE PRESS SEVERELY' CENSURED Tlie Balkan tangle is the occasion of intense anxiety in tlie European capitals at the present moment. Greece is stated to have for- ■ mnlated a reply to the Entente's demands which amounts to a statement of conditional neutrality. A political crisis is approaching in Rumania, where the general opinion, is that if intervention does com© it will be on the side of the Allies. The Bulgars are greatly exercised over the preparations-which the Russians are making to invade the Peninsula, and at the same time are eyeing with distrust their new-found friends, the Turks, whose presence in Thrace is regarded with suspicion. Monastir has been abandoned by the Serbians, and the enemy will find it an empty husk. Of the Serbians themselves there are various reports, most of them indicating that their armies have been scattered, and are now re-forming boyond the frontier, in Albania, and Montenegro. The NorfchclifFe Press has been severely censured in the House of Commons by Sir John Simon, the British Home Secretary, who hints darkly of trouble in store for recalcitrant newspapers.
