A Copenhagen message reports that rumours regarding a return of Sclilesfrig to Denmark,' as a post-war payment for her neutrality, have produced n German proclamation to the effort that the military position does not facilitate speculation as to Germany's ability to give away anything, and that it is unfair to suppose that Denmark's neutrality is to bo bought. rSchleswig, with Heligoland and the. former ducliies of Holstein and Lauenburg, is a province of Prussia, just south of Denmark. The. provineo is crossed by the Baltic Ship Canal (sixtyone miles long), and other canals. Successively Danish and German, or sometimes independent, for more than a thousand years, Sclileswig-llolstein was the scene of an unsuccessful rebellion against Denmark in 1848-50, but in 1864 was wrested from her by Prussia and Austria. The dissensions between these Powers led to the Austro-Prussian war of 18G6, and to the ultimate incorporation of the Duchies with Priissin.l
