Accounts of the fighting along the Tigris show that the Turks were heavily entrenched behind barbed-wire ; They numbered thirty thousand, including lots of Arabs. "The Turk 6 mined the river, but we bridged it during the evening and orossed over. The next day's battle was lively for a few hours. Our gunboats crept up and made it too warm tor the enemy, who retreated, leaving his guns. We oaptured sixteen hundred men and twenty guns. Reaching Kutelamara, we found the cavalry there. This is the place at which the Army has arrived before the Navy. The Turks fought •amazingly well up to a certain point, but suddenly crumbled' up, and are now in full flight for Bagdad. Our cavalry and armoured cars are in pursuit."
STEAMER ATTACKED BY AIR-PIRATES

Three German aeroplanes near the Noord Hinder lightship attacked the steamer Balgownie, from London to Rotterdam, Tvitn rifle and machine-gun fire and bomb-throwing, lastmg _ twenty minutes. The attack was fruitless, as the steamer'went at full speed and escaped undamaged. The aeroplane disappeared southward.

Percy and Archibald Hurd, in ( a book entitled "The New Empire Part- • nership," point out that there must be i * single Navy in the British .Empire. They oppose separate Canadian, Australian, and other colonial fleets as fatal to maritime efficiency. Mr. Sidney Low, reviewing the book, says: "It follows that there must be one Imperial Executive for defence and foreign policy, representing the entire community of Empire States.
