NOTES AND COMMENTS lET 9LEKCOB.I A number of horse's claiming, engagements at Feildiug were railed there onSaturday. .It certainly looks as ,if the summev fixture of thp club will attract record fields. Secretary E. Goodbehere, of the Feilding Jockey Chib, has arranged for excursion fares on all lines on Tuesday and 'Wednesday next. A special train will leave Palmerston North each <lay at 11.20 a.m.. and this will connect with the morning trains from the Wairarapa and Manawatu lines. ~ • Up till Friday next, at 10 p.m., SecreJ. M. Johnston, of the Manawatu Racing Club, will receive entries, for the summer meeting, to he held on' December 27, 28, and 29. Entries for the Stratford meeting close on Monday next, December G. The Stratford Cup is worth 350 sovs., and the Malone Memorial Handicap on the second day has 250 sovs. stake monoy. The club has four open races on - its programme, and as the Taranaki. Club has als.) the samo number, many owners in these parts wfll probably go into the question of making the trip. The whole of the profits from the Stratford meeting are to be devoted to the patriotic fuud3. Nominations for all events at the Taxatahi meeting closc on Friday next with Secretary J. R. Bairstow, Box 10, CaTterton. Friday next is general entry day for the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting. At the same time acceptances for tho Auckland Cup and Railwav Handicap are due, also first forfeits W the Foal and RoyaJ Stakes and Derby. ' Sir Solo has been responsible for some smart work on tho Opaki tracks lately, and on Friday last he 'surprised his trainer by accounting for Montana over a mile spin. That the Sir Laddo gelding will be at his best by the time tho Auckland Cup meeting comes on is the opinion of the local experts. A handicap suggests an exciting contest in the St. Andrew's Handicap at tho Fcilding meeting. The new expanding girth, patented bv a West Australian, is being rushed by trainers in the Old Country, but at pre.
sent there is great difficulty in securing; the adequate supplies of elastic, and it. is feared that it will he months before) tho orders can lis filled. The simplicity of tho device, which, l>y means of a few inches of strong elastic let into the webbing, secures tho full expansion of a horso's lungs, caused many people to wonder that no 0110 had over thought of,it befoi-o.
Tho imported liorso Redfern, for whom Sir William Copper paid upwards / of .£SOOO iu England, and who is expected to race in Australia before long, was seized with an illness recently while, returning to Sydney from Melbourne, where he had gone in order to remain undr-l tho personal supervision of his trainar. It was found necessary to talco him off the train at Albury, but he was able to continue tho journey on tho following day, and is now roported to be all right again.
Tho racing at Peilding will bo full of interest—that is to say, most of - the cvonts will be. Principal interest will oitend to tile l'eilding .Stakes (five furlongs), in which tho Maltster horse Bimetor has -been brought all the way from. Iticcarton to engage some of tho smartest two-year-olds in tho Dominion. His trainer is very confident, but though Biiniter goes very. fast over a short course, ho will want to liavo his share of luck at the ballot-box, for if the'two-year-olds get tho insido running the black horse may be unable to head them off before the first turn, and if ho cannot by this stajte lie is not likely to lie able to como from behind and do it. For tho' big handicap Tangilion, Montana, and Goldstream aro the popular selections, and for tho Flying Handicap Astor, who always races woll on this course, promises to be as well fancied as anything in Uio race.
Kupahu, winner of the Spring Handicap at Takapnna on Saturday, was making his third appearance at tho meeting. On the first day ho fell in the Borough Handicap, and on .Saturday he finished third "behind Kitty Bellairs and Hydras. In tlia Cautley Handicap, two races later, lie was brought out again, and to the general surprise lie scored over a mile. The Sabretache gelding won three events last year, but they were all over short courses, one of four furlongs, and two of live furlongs. He is owned by tho Grisborne sporbsmau, Mr. W. S. Davidson, who used to race Goldfinder, Dazzling, and the hurdle gelding Grey King.
