A VICTORY FOR BRITISH PRINCIPLES.

Bj .Telenraph—Presu Association—CoDyrljlU London, November 26. The Merthyr Tydvil by-election resulted:—Mr. Stanton, I0,i8G; Mr. Winstone, 6080. [Mr. Stanton resigned the miners' leadership, disapproving of the local Independent Labour Party's views. Mr. Stanton declared that, though he was a Socialist, he was a Britisher first. He decided to oppose Mr. Winstono, the Independent Party's selected candidate.]

ICNOCK-OUT BLOW TO THE ANTIPATRIOTS. (Rec. November 27, 8.30 p.m.) London, November 27. Mr.- Stanton's victory is regarded as of the greatest significance. Merthyr was tho stronghold of tho Independent Labour Party, and well organised by the lato Mr. Keir Hardio's followers, who were determined that the . new member should share their anti-war views, and we're prepared to accept him as a fitting successor to Mr. Keir Hardie. ■ Tho result shoivs that Mr. Stanton had a strong personal influence with the minors, despite tho fact that Mr. Winstono was tho official Labour candidate. Mr. Stanton is an advanced Socialist, but all for .war, and warmly supported tho coalition and tho principle of conscriptibn if 'that should be necessary. He was opposed to syndicalism and peace talk, and thus captured most of the Liberal and many of tho Unionist votes. The "Pall Mall Gazette" says: "This has been the first- election contest which has been foughft-'in "England on tho war issues, and resulted in the complete and crushing defeat of the only party which held a definite anti-patri-otic policy."
