NEW ZEALAND DOCTOR'S STORY

By-Teleßrapli-Preas Aeaooiation-Oopjriglit , London, November 26. ■ A : New Zealand doctor states that when the Marquette, was torpedoed everybody rushed on deck. Fortunately, they were well drilled. Each knew liis post, and the lifebelts were haiidv on the decks. .It is variously estimated that from soveu to twenty minutes elapsed before the vessel sank bow first. There was no panic. Unfortunately, the boats were not well .managed, and Almost all were swamped. • "There were enough loose .gear, rafts, gratings, lifebuoys, and planks for everyone. I swam,' and reached a lifebuoy. The water' was rather 'rough, but it became smooth. I saw a periscope for half-an-lwur. It was a hundred yards away; the submarine was apparently awaiting the arrival of any rescue ship. We were not picked up for six hours. Our. wireless did not indicate our exact position, and this explains the delay in the arrival of assistance. A French destroyer picked us up, those-saved including Major D. S. Wylie, Captain D. N. Isaacs, Captain E. Tiechelmann,' and Captain J. P. D. Leahy, and nine sisters. It is not known how the girls managed, to hold on. Their endurance •was wonderful. Many clung to boards, oars, and rafts, with the greatest courage and calmness. Now Zealand women and men played the game. .Wo are all well."
