COMFORT ASSURED

NEW SEATS FOR, THE TOWN HALL.

Ever since the opening of the Town Hull intermittent complaints have been made about the seating accommodation, which consists of hard stamped woodbottomed Austrian chairs, held together in rows by a batten screwed' under the seats. The reason for screwing so many seats together was in order to make the work of clearing the hall and reseating it a comparatively simple matter. Upholstered seats havo been advocated for years, and at length the City Council has accepted the tender of Mr. It. Edwards to re-seat the galleries of the Town Hall ,and Concert Chamber with upholstered seats, and this work is to be proceeded with at once. As most people are concerned l one way or another with the Town Hall, it will interest people to . know exactly what kind of seat has been accepted. According to the sample submitted to the council, the chair will have a solid cast-iron standard, and the well-sprung tip-up seat will have a breadth of 18 inches by a depth of 17 inches. The distance between the centre of the arms is _20J inches, so there is ample space provided for each individual Next to the seat the back is tbs most impirtant part of tlie chair. This is an unupholstered wooden-framed back,, with a centre of red imitation leather.' The back, .which fits in grooves in the standard, can be lifted out at ploasuro. It is 19£ inches wide, _ and is 21} inches in length, descending right down to tho level of the seat, so that no interference oan be caused to sitters from tho feot of people behind. Tho seat is upholstered inan attractive shade of brignt red imitation leather. ■

There have been <->ccasicns during carnivals and bazaars when it has been found expedient to clear the galleries of scats. This will not. be possible when the new gallery seats'are scrowed to Mio floor.
