BEET SUGAR PROSPECTS
In their report for 1915, Tecently issued, the council of ■ the Incorporated English Beet Sugar Pioneer Association states that the outbreak of war has entirely revolutionised the question of sugar production owing to the fact that more than half the world's consumption of sugar is produced by countries where war is raging. after hostilities broke out the association approached t.he British Government and urged upon it the necessity of giving official support to the work in hand, and, doubtless largely by reason of this pressure,' it was announced that Professor Orwin, of Oxford University, had been appointed to conduct an inquiry into tho possibilities of beet-sugar cultivation in England. The' report issued by the professor spoke very favourably of the Pioneer Association's Cornish scheme, and hopes are entertained that tho Board of Agriculture may bo induced to put matters before tho Treasury. "Whilo regretting tho delay which has occurred," says the report, "your council deem it necessary to call tho attention of the authorities to tho fact that unless an early decision is arrived at it will be quite impossible to orect and equip a factory in time for tho 19IG campaign."
