ACCOUNTANT STUDENTSSOCIETY
I ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. ' At the annual general meeting of the Wellington Accountant Students' Society last night, the president (iUr. Ernest W. Hunt) was in the chair, and there was an attendance of 30 members. The annual report and the statement of accounts were, auopted. The report showed.that the Toll of mom. bership.had reached a record total-dur--1 ing- the year, and thht, notwithstanding the absence of many members on aotive service, the; attendance .at the various meetiiigs ''Ka'd-'-ljecii"" jfiosf' encouraging. During 'the i 'y€ar!'''the" ! cdmmittee inaugurated a scholarship,-but in view of the fact that it.was started at a time when 1 so many young- .men were enlisting in His Majesty's Forces, the question will have to be considered as to whether the scholarship "will justify its continuance. 'The public speaking competition for the trophy donated by Mr. Ernest W.' Hunt was successful in every way, and the in-, terest in the competition was materially increased by the presence of the Councillors of the New Zealand Society'of Accountants. Tho following members of the society are already serving with tho forces Messrs. E. Ashe, S. J. Beniame, J. Cable, C. Charlesworth, G. C. Cooke, F. Correll, H. A. Cunningham, G. A. Dun- ! can, C. Preyberg, W. R. Gibson, H. L. I Halliday, H, W. Heyhoe, B. J. Hoare, T. H; Jones, T. ,T'. King, 'T. Korimete, D. (J. Johnston, J. C. Low, A. C. H. Miller, W. H. Nicholls, Ed. Norris, W. AL Allen, T.,Auton.'W.' C. Harrington, S. M. Hobba, A. Hore, G. B. Hull; J. M. Preston, ■ Earl Stewart, E.;N. Tarrant. . In moving, tho adoption of the Teport, the chairman congratulated the society upon the substantial increase in membership, ' wh'ioh, in ' view "of • the ' war, was very satisfactory. Another matter for congratulation was tho fact that tho . syllabus had been • kept as praotical as possible, and covered tho ground required for tho examinations. It was gratifying to 'find that members of the society who had passed their examinations were willing to come forward as lecturers to assist those who were not so ; fax advanced. Of the 29 members rfio had gone to the front, it was pleasing to note that hone had been lost to the society, though some had been wounded and some invalided 'home. The society M certainly done its sharo in assisting the Empire, and, in addition to those already.serving, several had unlisted, andwere waiting to be called up. Touching upon ■ the subject of examinations, the chairman' expressed regret that the New Zealand Society of Accountants was not directly represented upon tho University Senate, because the' accountancy, examinations wcro by far- the biggest examinations at . present-conducted by- the University. Generally, the men'elected to the Senato were specialists in some particular line, which did not allow them to be in touch with accountancy, and their sympathies were not with the accountants. A better condition of. affairs might, however, be looked for in ; the near future. ' , ' Appreciation of the work of the retiring secretary (Mr. Thos. Auton) was freely expressed, and members regretted that, as he was shortly.to join tho Reinforcements, hfs 'services would -for : the time be lost to tte'Society. : Officers for the ensuing year wero elected as follow:—President, Mr. Ernest W.
