FRENGH AND BULGARS AT GRIPS • FIERCE BATTLE PROCEEDING RUSSIA WILL'ATTACK BULGARIA WITHIN A WEEK , SERBIANS' DOGGED RETREAT - / 5 INCREASING NERVOUSNESS OF - THE TURKS i " , It is reported by a correspondent in Italy that the fortress of Gorizia has fallen, an event paving tho way , for a formidable Italian invasion of Hungary and 'of the Istrian Peninsula, where the Austrian Fleet is sheltering, and for a flank attack- upon tho Austro-German communications with tho Balkans and tho Near East. A French official messago states that Gorizia is no longer tenable by tiie Austrians, but does not say that it has been eptered by .tho Italians.. Further assurances are given that Greece has conceded the demands of the Allies in regard to the security of their communications and freedom to .use her territory as a base in the development of the Balkan campaign. The Serbian northern army is, retreating, hard pressed by the enemy, and the civil population is enduring terrible privations; but in the south Monastir is still'secure and a great'battle is in progress between the Allies and a Bulgarian army, said to number 80,000 men. The Allies are rapidly developing agreat military depot at Salonika, and large supplies of munitions are being sent to Monastir. Serbia .has summarily rejected peace proposals submitted" by the Austro-Gen-mans. There are renewed reports that Russia is about to send strong forces into tho Balkans, and it .is stated that Italy'has agreed to send .40,000 men; Heavy, artillery fighting is reported' at the Dardant olios. Attempts by the Turks to recover tho trenches captured in a British attack near Krithia 011 November 15 wore decisively repelled. On the Eastern front the Russians report successes in tho Baltic Provinces and in Galicia<
