ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL
WAR PENSIONS DISCUSSED,
/War pensions were dismissed last night at a.speoial meeting of tho Onslow Borough Council, the Mayor (Fr. 0. 0. Qrump) presiding. The , meeting was called for the purpose of considering, the water scheme, but a place on the order paper was given to a letter from the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), enclosing the War League's recommendations in regard to war pensions, and mentioning that' it was intended to bring the. recommendations (already published) under the notice of the Government by means/ of a deputation. General support was .accorded the recommendation, with the exoeption of clause 6, referring to the allowanco to widows with ana without children. In this connection the War League , recommended that tho allowanco for children be increased and continued until beyond the age of 16 years for purposes of education. _ Councillor W: Appleton moved that a letter be written to the executive of the War League intimating that the council would support all tho recommendations, with tho exception of the one referred to. Ho pointed out that the pensions were already a great burdten on the State, and he contended that when a child' attained the age of 16 it 6hould not be in need of further assistance. .
Councilor J. M. Dale seconded the motion, and a discussion followed. Eventually Councillor A. E. Budd moved as an amendment tha.t tho recommendations bo supported without exception.
The amendment seconded by .Councillor J. G. Smith, and was oarried on the casting voto of the Mayor. Councillor Appleton took exception to the maimer in which the motion had been put to tho meeting, and accused the Mayor of-a "quibble." > The Mayor thereupon requested ' the withdrawal of the expression, and as the Tequest was not complied with, Councillor Appleton was ruled out for oontempt of tho Chair, and withdrew ftfdm the meeting. Subsequently a further opportunity was afforded the councillor to withdraw the expression, and while lie persisted in his refusal he offered the explanation, that he intended no disrespect to the <Jhair.
Tho explanation, was accepted and ihe incident closed.
Consideration of Mr. J. E. Pulton's report on the water scheme was the next business.
On the motion of Councillor Dale, it was resolved that the borough engineer be directed to prepare an estimate of the number .of houses above the 400 ft. level.
It was further resolved, on the motion of Councillor H. Brenton Rule, that_ a letter bo written to Mr. Fulton inquiring what amount of water he would recommend be stored in the upper reservoir, aud if there were any possibility of leakage in the lower reservoir, as his ■recent letter suggested would probably occur in the upper reservoir. Further consideration of the sohemo will bo deferred \mtil Mr: Fulton's reply comes to hand.
