rQLICE CASES,

There were but few cases for. hearing at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, - when Mr. D. G. _A. Cooper, S.M., presided. A .Norwegian, named Albert .Neilson, pleaded 'guilty to the theft of goods from the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Ruapelm on Thursday last. The value of goods was only sot down at lis., but the theft from tho vessel constituted an indictable., offence, ..and tho prisoner was committed to ■■■ the' 1 Supreme Court for sentence.

James Coble, who, although only '1§ years of age, measured something like 6ft. 3inl in height, pleaded guilty to a charge of deserting from the steamer Rangatira. Inspector Hendrey suggested that, as prisoner was really nothing more than an overgrown boy, he should, -if sent to gaol, be kept apart from other prisoners. The Magis-, trate, in passing a sentence of fourteen days' imprisonment, to be served in the Auckland gaol, directed that Coble should bo kept apart from other prisoners, and that he should he placed aboard the vessel beforo she sailed on December 1.

Rana Bogwan, an Asiatic,, who stated that ho resided in Forester's Lane, was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that ho was found by night without lawful excuse in an unoccupied shop'in Tory_ Street. Accused had, on his own admission, been drinking, and as. there was no evidence of criminal intent, the vagrancy charge was withdrawn by leave of the Court. >"

Proceedings ,by summons were taken against, four young men for allegedly aiding and abetting one Walter Anderson, when the latter assaulted Charles Felix Pratt at'a garage in Tory Street on November 1. The names of the defendants were Frederick Thompson Connell, Joseph Albert Hayes/James Arthur Shaw, and William Joseph Wright. Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh, representing two of the defendants, applied for an adjournment, and the whole of the cases wore accordingly postponed until December 1. For drunkenness,' Thomas Brocklebank, who did not appear, was, fined the amount of his bail (205.). A firstoffending inebriate was also dealt with. ALLEGED CRUELTY. A charge of cruelly . ill-treating a horse by working it when it was not in a fit condition was preferred, against a man named Walter John Fellinghani, who pleaded guilty. A fine of £3 was imposed, the alternative being one month's imprisonment.
