ASHHURST MEETING

CUP. WON BT HIS EMINENCE,

(By Telegranli.-Speoial Correspondent.) Palmerston North, Novomber 24. The Ashaurst-Pohangina Racing Club's meeting was held to-day, and the gathering was an all round success. In the Hurdles the Wanganui-owned White Plume' started a slightly better favourite than Hengey, who is now an inmate of A. Attwood's stables. The latter led for iix furlongs, when ho was collared by White Plume and Rexer. The latter was in front at the straight entrance, and won by a length from White Plume. Hoseblush was a poor third, and then came Cokcly and Cyra. Abarcoed lost his rider at the fence, opposite the stand. Cyra finished very fast. The stewards challenged the running of White',, Plume, but accepted the rider's explanation. R. ■ M'Lenney, rider,- of Abercoed, received slight concussion. Lady Middleton, Evadne, and Hushabye waro fancied in that order for tho open sprint event. The favourite was very badly placed at the start, and Hushabye, on the rails, with Bootle, led .to the turn, where the latter cried enough. Tangiwai and Evadne wero •prominent as they raced into the straight, out onco in a line for home the favourite, who had been improving her position, came very fast, and won all out by a neck. Tangiwai was clear of Evadne in third place. Another favourite in Martlet prevailed in the Flying Hack Handicap. The Awapuni mare jumped away smartly, and was greatly. advantaged at the turns. In tho 6traight she was out by herself, and won very easily. Sea Lord, who came fast in the straight, just beat Jean Laddo, who, with Papauira, was most prominent of the others. In the early stages of. the race Lady Daylesford showed pace, but finished badly. Pomeroy was fourth, just a head in front of Multiplication. The latter was having his first race since his operation, and will d<J better later on.

In. the Cup.Maniaroa, Jam, and His Eminence were supported in that order. At tho start Sicily jumped out from Bunting, "with the favourite last. At the half -mile the field was bunched, but, Jem was badly stopped. His Eminence was clear of Bunting as they came into the straight, and in tho run home ho won easily; Sicily ran close up, and then came Wild Lupin, Ceylon, and Maniaroa. An inquiry was held into the mishap to Jem, and C. Carmont,' rider of His Eminence was severely cautioned. The biggest field of the day contested the Hack Welter Handicap, and the Hawera-trained Glacier was made favourite, with Mystified 6econd choice. A furlong from- home this pair were clear .of the field, but Summit and Roumania finished well; and thougn they each beat Glacier they .could not catch Mystified, who won easily. Glacier was fourth. Roumania ran a good race after gettingstopped once, and Waitomo also ran better than he has done previously. Tho winner stripped very wetl. and made a lot of friends by her condition. Glorify got all the best of the 6tart in the Maiden Handicap, but he stopped badly in the straight when looking all over a winner. Ohiwia (Elysian—Wairakau) won nicely from Need, who was badly placed in the first part of the race. Nainur was prominent the whole way, and, aided by a good run on the fence, finished close up to the placed horses. In the OpenAVelter Handicap eleven horses faced the starter. Black Lupin was made a hot order. In the preliminaries Combustion moved very freely, and made any friends. At the barrier Black Lupin gave trouble, but he got out "well.? Zeus soon took charge, and led to the home turn; with Epworth, Black Lupin, and Combustion following. In the straight the latter shot out, and won very decisively. 'Lady Laddo, .who had been carried wide at the turn, was clear of Tangiwai, and then oame Wild Lupin, Blaok Lupin, and Orleans. The public made Sea Lord favourite in the concluding • event. He drew No. 1 position, and was out .first, b.ut; .Tavistock and.Trials soon headed him,7a"nd -the', Vasco geldingled into.the.straight. Here Trials-ran up tohim, and while the pair were fighting out the . finish Pomeroy jointid' in: The,trio-passed, the post in. aline, Trials getting the verdict by a head.
