Writing from Tbe Apes, Gallipoli Peninsula, to Sir James Carroll, Lieut.Colonol J. Gethin Hughes, commanding tlio Canterbury Battalion, states: "Recently some forty odd Maoris had been attached to my battalion, our share of the number allotted' to the New Zealand Infantry Brigade. They come with, a Very good chit from the BrigadierGeneral Commanding the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Brigado, with whom tjiey had some very severe fighting. I had the chit published in my battalion orders. General Godley was hero yesterday, and asked me how they were getting on. _ I told him that I was very pleased indeed to have thbm in my battalion, as they aro always oheorfui, keen to bo taught, wonderfully alert .in the trenches, willing workers'_ when on fatiguo (and God knows there aro fatigues in plenty); in fact,_ they were an object lesson to wo white Maoris. The General said, 'Write and tell them in Now Zealand.' Sir James, lam glad of tho permission, and hope you will let the New Zealand people—particularly thoir Maori people—know how splendidly these gallant Maoris are dojng their bit for Kin*, end Empir«."
