FALL OF GORIZIA IMMINENT
"FATE HANGING BY A SLENDER THREAD" ITALIANS IN THE SUBURBS By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright Rome, November 23.. The Italians are daily rapturing trenches, blockhouses, and'forts. The main Austrian defences in Gorizia hang on a single thread. Tie defenders of Mounts Sabotina, Podgora, Calvario, San Miohele. and Doberdd, where there were most formidable fortifications, were almost wiped out. * Fighting is proceeding in the suburbs of Gorizia. ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) The "Times" correspondent at tho Italian headquarters says: 'The last obstacles to the conquest of Tolmino and Gorizia ■ are being persistently surmounted. The torrential rains have ceased, and the enemy's defensive is weakening. The difficulties in the Tyrol are enormous. -When the enemy has. been dislodged from a seemingly invincible first' position ho has retired to others more formidable. _ The Auetrians are' 6olidly entrenched in heavily armoured cement. The mountains dominating the highways have become fortresses, surrounded by hedges of thick wire five yards deep, the wire being highly charged with There are powerful mines everywhere. Snow prevents surprise attacks. Italian volunteers advance and destroy the mines and entanglements Pew escape alive, but despite their heroism the advance is of the most difficult character.'' HIGH OOMMIGSIONER'S REPORT. The High Commissioner reports:— ' London, November 24, 4.45 a.m. "The Italians, between San Valentina and Podgora have seized forts 73 and 67, capturing one thousand prisoners. The other forts were destroyed by the Italian artillery."
