The Hon. A. L. Herdman will, sayß S Press Association telegram from Napier, inspect land at Petane to-day to see ii it is suitable for a settlement for discharged soldiers.
The Rev.' Mr. Fraer (brother of .Mr. Frank ITraer, of Wellington) is to-bo retained for another sis months, in Europe as chaplain to the Maoris ; especially -with the Maori wounded in England. The Church authorities in the Pld Country have specially requested this, owing to the number of Maori* sick, wounded, or convalescent, who value, a friend they knew well here to specially look after- their interests.
At the annual meeting of the Wellington, Stock Exchange, held yesterday afternoon, the opportunity wa6 taken by the, chairman to present to Mr. A. M. Stuart, a member of the Exchange, who has enlisted for active service, a wristlet watch as a token of respect and esteem from his fellow members.
Mr. H. Lan Simson was yesterday elected to -a seat on the Hawke's Bay Rivera Board, no others having been nominated.
Detective Donald Cameronj who has been attached to the local police force for tHe past eleven years, left for Dunedin last night: on transfer. Prior to his departure his comrades in the force assembled at the Lambton Quay Police Station to bid him farewell, and on tbei r behalf Detective-Sergeant Rawle presented him with a set of razors an<i shaving accessories, t Councillor W. J. Welch was yesterday elected chairman of i the Masterton County Council for the ninth successive year. \ Mr. Andrew Thompson, of Wanganui, was presented with a special certificate by the Presbyterian Assembly to mark the close of his 63rd-year of Sunday School teaching. The Rev. J. D. M'Kenzie, of St. Paul's,. Wanganui, in, accepting the certificate on> Mr. Thompson's behalf, said he was proud to be associated with such a worker. Mr. Thompson was over 80 years of age.
Reference was made at the meeting of the Harbour J3oard last night to the death of Mr. William Campbell Bicker!ing, of the board's staff, lost off the transport Marquette, which was torpedoed in the Aegean Sea on October 23. It was resolved, oh the motion of Mr. Fletcher, that a letter of sympathy be sent to the widow, and that the hnlfpay allowed by the board to Mr. Pickering while on active service be continued "to the widow until her pension has been awarded.
