FOR NEXT DRAFT
POPULATION TO BE THE GUIDE THIS CITY'S SHARE WELLINGTON MILITARY DISTRICT'S QUOTAS. The CliicJ of_ tho General Staff announced yesterday that drafts of New Zealand men called up in t"ho immediate future for active servfce'are to be raised from the four military, districts on a new basis. The first system employed after the outbreak of war was to request equal quotas of every district. Thus a force of 2000 men would be called for as follows:—"
Auckland Military District ... 600 Wellington Military District 500 Canterbury Military • District 500 Otago Military District ...... 500
, ' , . 2000 ' An article published in The Dominion on June 3 showed that Otago (though asked for a quarter of the drafts) did not hold nearly a quarter of the population, and a few days afterwards it was officiary stated that the quotas would from then on be drawn in proportion to the number of registrations in the districts. The system of proportional quotas was pursued up till.the present, and now we are to have population quotas.
.the Government Statistician's Department has got out estimates of the total number of men of military age (20 years to 4-5 years) in every district, and on these figures the quotas will now be based.. This basis will ofctain until the contents of the National Register are known, and then it may be considered necessary to mate a further change. Hie Statistics Department's estimate of the percentage of men of military ago in the various districts are:—
Auckland Military District 25 Wellington Military District 32.4 Canterbury Military District .... 24.8 Otago Military District 17.8 .Those percentages now represent the district quotas. ■ 'A lO /i? urcs on. which the Government statistician has based these percentages are: — All men of military Auckland.
