Cha.rges arising out of a raid on premises known as 58 Elizabeth Street wore further investigated before Mr. 'D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., in tlie Magistrate's Court, yesterday. The premises had been visited by police officers about 10 o'clock on Thursday night, when jnine persons were arrested. .Three of these arrested persons', Henry Giles, Rosiua Henry, and Alice Hawthorne, were charged with keeping a brothel and with consorting with prostitutes. Jessie Sutherland was charged with assisting in tho management of the brothel, and with consorting with prostitutes, while the following were charged with consorting with prostitutes:—Ethel Florence Guilford, Andrew Price, George Wells, LeonardHenry Booker' (in soldier's uniform), and Francis Henry Gordon Guilford (also in soldier's uniform). Inspector Heiidrey prosecuted, and Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for the accused, all of whom pleaded not guilty. Evidence given by the police officers was to the effect that the house had been under observation for some time past. Complaints having been received as to the conduct of the premises. The defence was a denial of the oharges. •The informations against' Price and Boeker were dismissed, and decision was reserved in the other cases. PROBATION GRANTED. A young man, named Vivian Gillcbrand Asqmth, appeared ,011 remand' oharged with theft of money at Braemar, South Canterbury. He was admitted to probation for six mouths 011 condition that he repaid a sum of £10 within one month, and remained of good conduct during the full term of probation. MAINTENANCE. Alice Mooro was sentenced to ,two days' imprisonment in the Dunedin gaol for breach of a maintenance order, but the-warrant will not be enforced if she makes weekly payments in satisfaction of tho order and the arrears. George Reynolds Oliver was remanded to appear in Oliristchurcli to-day on a charge'of failing to maintain his wife and children. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. Frank Fitzsimmons was convicted of being an idle and disorderly person, and; was ordered to come up for. sentence when called upqn. OTHER CASES. Eight first-offending inebriates were leniently dealt with, and 'other persons .convicted of drunkenness wero penalised as follows: —William Thomas. ■Waters and Ja-bez Wooldridge, fined 405., with the option of going to prison for seven days; Edward Jackson and Henry Greenfield, fined 205., or three Says' imprisonment; Jeremiah Looney, Frederick Williams, William' Logan, and Eleanor Randell, fined 10s., or 48 hours' imprisonment. Georgo Murray was discharged without penalty,, and Mary Crow., was remanded for 'a week for medical treatment.
