Smith was associated with the extensive business of Elder, Smith and Co., Ltd. A Scotsman, born in 1824, the son of a minister of the Free Church of Scotland, and was a brother-in-law of the late Sir Thomas Elder. He was largely interested in pastoral pursuits, and was identified with many public, patriotic, and philanthropic movements, and noted for his munificence.]
