NOTES AND COMMSENT
IBY ijlencob.l In connection with the Ashhnrst Meeting next week, Secretary A. W. Trass has arranged for a special train service which will enable patrons from Masterton. Dannevirke, Foxton, and Feilding to return home the same evening. Excursion fares will also be issued from these placos. Warstep hns uow won ,£10,160 in stakes. A two-year-old by Sir Laddo, named Three Step, was among the winners at Wyong l'ark (N.8.W.), on November 9. At a sale of thoroughbreds held subsequent to the Molbourne Cup Meeting, the disappointing New Zealanaer, Cherubini, changed hands at 120gns., being acquired by Mr. j?. Burn. At the same sale Flash of Steel (Orby—Blakostown) was secured by Mr. W. Kelso at 550gns., nnd St. Spasa iSt. Amant—Carita) by Mr. T. C. Tait at 430gns. Kaminohe did not accompany the rest of tbo Hon. J. D. Ormond s horses back to Karamu, the son of Hymettus and Dryad having been sold. All arrangements are now completed fot the Ashhurst-Pohangina Meeting, to be Eeld next week, and if the- weather is fine the gathering will bo a suocess. Accommodation has been booked for a. large nuinbor of outside horses, which suggests that largo fields will bo the order of the day. , The Achillea—Stepina colt, one of the Waikanae lot which were sold at Sydney last Easter for 610gns., and was MUght by a Queensland sportsman, has been named Watta. He was a winner in the Hopeful Stakes on the opening day of the Queensland Turf Club Meeting, and finished fourth. Another Waikana«-bred youngster in Bradbury (Bezonian—Mallaig) finished third. The favourite was Mr. E. J. Watt's Maori Mat, who finished sixth. The five furlongs was run in lmin. lsec. Handicapper Morse's weights for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap were received yesterday, and favourable comment was passed on the work as a whole. Waratep, 9st. 41b.. has one pound less for her defeat in the New Zealand Cup. Chortle, 9st. lib., may be correctly placed on his best form, but lately he has not done well. De Gama, 9st, lib., will not be over, and Merry Roe, Bst. 101b., will not find the going to 6uit her at that time of the year. Colonel Soult, Bst, 71b., has got a chance, and Balboa, tot. filb., is likely to be the early fancy. The handioapper has taken a risk in letting Jack. Delaval in with Bst. 21b., and it may go against him; Rinaldo, Bst., has plenty, Rewi Poto, 7st. 131b., cannot stay, and Multiply, 7st. 121b., has been raised one pound for running third in the New Zealand Cup. Blackall, 7st. 71b., is well enough treated, and so is Mullingar, 7st. WaTstep is a five-year-old now, and should be at her best this summer. She won last year under Bst. 91b., and with only 91b, more should give a Rood account of herself on Boxing Day. .Baiboa was troubled last year with his feet, but if the going' is not too hard for him he vfill be dangerous, as he will be much more forward than he was at Riccarton. Blackall, 7st. 71b., appears to hold Multiply safe on Riccarton form, but the big Hastings-trained , horse has not furnished at all, and lie lacks tho dash and brilliancy necessary to win races, though he stays well. In the Railway Handicap the most noticeable feature is the treatment of Veronal, who has paid dearly for hor sec. ond in the Electric Plate. Probable the Linacre mare will not survive the first payment, as, the stable has a useful representative in Three. At Wanganui in the autumn Hoy gavo Veronal 2st. and a beating, so at a difference of only 71'b. the latter could have no chance with tho Karamu mare. Tatterley, Bst. 91b., can be looked to to show up well. He was backward at Riccarton, but retains all his pace. Desert Gold is an unlikely runner, and R. J. Mason may keep None? for weight-for-age events. Loyal Arch, 7st. 81b., reads as well as anything. A local' owner was endeavouring to purchase Welcome Nugget during the week, but the deal did - not eventuate. The Signor gelding is pretty well now, and may win a good handicap during the holiday meetings.
