"SHIPPING AND COMMERCE." ■ "Shipping and Commerce of Australia," in annual review form, has come' to hand, and as usual with this authority on shin-, ping and trade matters, the production is a creditable one, and a worthy' successor to previous issue®. The "Review'? 'deals at : some length with the dislocation of trade brought about by the outbreak of hostilities, out it points' out that in Bpite of the different conditions Australia has been able to develop stiU further her resources. There is also an extensive review of. the . banking and financial situation in Australia general-' ly,' together with interesting articles on the viticultural industry, meat and wool trade, and . the ooal industry. Other matters of .importance dealt with are the shipping situation as-it affects the Commonwealth, and the immigration- A complete table of the exports of Australia and of New Zealand for a period of twelve months ended on June 30 last is a feature, while the number also presents a list of the. total, shipping inward and outward at Australian ports.' The coal trade, agriculture, manufacture, fijifrctico, and many other subjects. aro also discussed in. authoritative articles, and 'the • production, which is profusely illustrated,- will commend itself to business people.

RETURN OF THE SAILER. : A'few weoka ago news came to hand to the effect that Messrs. C. Lundin and. Sons had purchased the Norwegian barques, Activ and shakospnare, and it now transpires that Messrs. Lundin have also purchased the Norwegian barque Lalla Rookh. It is ■ vry pleasing to mention that at least ono firm does not intend to allow the windjammer to fade into oblivion. The Lalia Rookh. is a very flno veEael of 841 tons register, and was built by R. • Steele • and Co., of Greenock, in 1871, tho firm which, by tho way. has built some very fast vessels,, but is now out of business. Tho Lalla Rookh was sold by Messrs. Lever Bros., of Port Sunlight, about six .Tears ago to Norwegians, and has since that time been tramping tho deep looking for payablei freights. Like tho Shakespeare,, she is now loading a cargo of Baltic pine at Norway for Adelaide, -where she will be handed over to her new owners. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. ' Mr. T. W. Jenkins, 'seventh engineer of the Maori, has left that vessel. Mr. A. J. Fernie, shipping manager for Johnston and Co., will return from a visit to Marlborough Sounds by the Blenheim this evening. Messrs. Groates and Jackson, chief officer and second officer respectively of tho Canterbury Steamship Company's- Storm, have been accepted for eervice., Mr. Groates is proceeding Homo by the Ruapehu to join tho mine-sweepers, and Mr. Jackson went into camp at Trentham on November 17. The above makes a total of eight enlistments from tho C.S.S. Company. Mr. Richmond has'succeeded Mr. M'Mastere' as chief engineer of the Kauri. Mr. M'Masters has gone to Auckland for instructions. . • . Mr. F. 1. Cro6bie, third engineer of the [ Rosamond,, who is on leave, arrived by the Tarawera yesterday. ' . Captain M'Beth. late of the Mokoia, was a passenger to Sydney by the Ulimaroe last evening. On Tuesday last tho Huddart-Parkei steamer Wimmera loft Hobart for Wellington. Bhe is due here to-morrow afternoon, with 100 passengers end 660 tons of cargo for this port. The Wimmera will sail for Melbourne, via southern ports and Hobart at 5 p.m. on Monday. With 2000 tons of coal the Perth is due at. Wellington from Newcastle on Monday next. A Press Association message received from London that tho Ruahino has left England for Auckland and Wellington. She Is duo at the northern port on December 31, and at Wellington a few day 6 -later. In addition to other cargo the steamer , Werribce, whioh is due at Wellington from San Francisco on November 28, has 300.000 feet of Oregon pine consigned to the Odlin Timber and Hardware Co. A peculiar accident occurred in the harbour yesterday morning- to the tug ICarake. The hulk Ooromandel was>being towed from ono berth to another, when' by some mean 3 or other she foulod the ' Karaka's funnel stays. Tho heavy strain on the funnel caused it to break about halfway up. The Karaka's bulwarks were also wrenched away, and it is estimated that the damage will take two or three days to repair. It is announced that the U.S. and A. .Line's -Canastota. which has been blocked on account of the 6lip in the Panama Canal, will not loavo New York for New Zealand ports till January nest.

The American schooner E. B. Jackson is pretty well clear of her cargo of Oregon pine, and is expected to get away early next week from Port Chalmers. Her destination has not yet been announced. A cablegram has been received by tho Dunedin agents for the A. and A. Line, stating that the Walton Hall was dispatched from New York on October 30 for New Zealand ports, via Molbourno and Sydnoy. From Capo Campbell light the Government steamer Hiuemoa lias visited Jackson Head Beacon and tho Brothers' light. She will probably put into Wellington ■ to-day, and will subsequently visit other Cook Strait lights. . ,• On account of the large amount of carco which had to bo handled.the IJlimaroa did not get away for Sydney direct till late last ovening. It was originally intended that tho Rangatira should leave for Napier on Monday evening. These arrangements have been changed, however, and the vessel is expected to get away to-morrow morning for Napier, Whoagarel, Auckland, cad London.
