PATRIOTIC ENTERTAINMENTS
1 (To the Editor.) Sir,—Some little time ago in dealing with the Captain M'Laglen performance you pointedly _ pointed out that the demonstration, instead of adding to tho Patriotic Society's Funds, deducted no less a sura thai £39 Bs. How much better do they do things privately?' Recently a complimentary concert -was given to Miss Harriet Pearson. The Concert Hall had to he paid for, and the gross takings were £39 165., and the .expenses £8 65., so, that £31 10s. was sent to Miss Pearson. You publish a paragraph in The Dominion this morning of another concert given in aid of the Patriotic Funds, the total receipts of which -were £52 9s. sd. In this case the' Patriotic Funds benefited to the extent of £9 15s. 9d., the expenses amounting to no less than £32 13s. Bd., and tho hall was given freel Where did all this money go to ? Tho Mayor has a balancesheet—it ought to be published. People contribute freely; to patriotic purposos, but it seems, as in this case, three-fifths of the amount contributed is diverted from its object.
