UNREST AMONGST SEAMEN
STATEMENTS AND OPINIONS. By Telcsrnnli.—Press Association. Dunndin, Novembor 17. A gentleman In close touch vrith seamen visiting this port, stated to-day that there was considerable irritation amongst men at what- was termed the ''scare liows" coming from northern towns, chiefly Wellington, regarding the probability of industrial troublo on ships. Ho said the men were far too loyal to think of such action at present, even if they had cause for discontent, whicli they had not, and that somo sailors had expressed the opinion that certain newspaper writers appeared to havo tlio desire to build up' a strike for them. Mr. Belcher, secretary of the local branch of the Federated Seamen's Union, stated that he could safely speak on behalf of the members of tlio organisation from Auckland to Dunedin, and said that there was not the slightest suspicion of troublo with tho seamen. The federation was determined honourably to' carry out tho agreement with shipowners, and was most careful to safeguard itself against being embroiled without tho fullest consideration in any industrial dispute which might occur amongst outside organisations.
