Amongst those whose services havo been accepted by the Defenco Department this week is Mr. William Low, the well-known' theatrical advauco representative and manager, who has toured New Zealand on many occasions during the last ten years. Mr. Low was at one time a champion runner, having put- up a unique record by winning the.quarter-mile and half-mile New Zealand championships, tliree years in succession—at Dunedin in 1894, in Christelmrch in 1895, and in Napier in 1896. At Lancaster Park, Cliristchnrcli, in 1596, he also won the quar-ter-milo Australasian championship in 51sec. That' year he retired unbeaten from the track. For some timo ho was a principal in the firm of Gill and Low, indent agents in Wellington, during which time he was secretary of the first Amateur Boxing Association, and was one of the founders of tho Wellington Harriers, of which body he is a life member.
