According t-o cable information received by the local agents for the F. and S. Lino the new steamer Devon will leave Liverpool for Australian ports on December 24. The Dovo i is one of the four new vessels, orders for which were placed nearly two years ago. The (juartet have all been, specially designed for tho United Kingdom-Austra-han-New Zealand trade, and whilst the hulls were built abroad; - engines were constructed and installed in England. The Devon and her sister vessels arc 'essentially cargo-carriers, with extensive refrigerator space, and will ipossess a higher' rate of speed. It is an interesting fact in the vessel's career that, she was being constructed at Dunkirk during the bombardment o fthat city by tho Germans.Subscquenlly she was towed from that port to Loudon, where her construction was completed. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. H. C- White, third officer of the Uararoa, has come ashore. Captain F. A. M'lndoe, secretary of the lUerclißAL Service Guild, has gone to Dunedin in oit.er to attend the conference on behalf of the Guild with representatives of the Uniojt Company. Mr. W. N. 0. She is due here on Sunday evening next, and will sail for southern port.-', Hobart, and Melbourne on Monday, November 22. On, account of the late arrival of the second express from tho south, the Maori's departure from Lyttelton was delayed last evening. She is duo about 9 a.m. to-day. The Orari, which is .at present discharging Liverpool cajgo at Wellington, is expected to leave for the south either to-day or to-morrow. Due here from Newcastle on Thursday or Friday, the Union Omopany's turret steamer Koromiko has 3350 tons of coal. SO tons of coke, and 198 tons of timber to land. On account of yesterday's heavy rain tho departure of tho Ulmiaroa for Lyttelton has ' been .postponed til! to-day. She will return here in timo to leave for Sydney at 5 p.m. on Friday—one day late. . Tile Rangatira (from Port OhaAmcrs), and the Karamea (from Gisborne) arc expected to arrive at Wellington for Homeward loading to-day. The ferry steamer Duchoss will be placed on the Patent Slip at an early dote to undergo overhaul. 'i'he local agents for the Nort-horn Company advise that tile Rarawa will leave Onehunga for Nov Plymouth to-day, instead of to-morrow as usual. yesterday's heavy rain has been responsible for delaying the departure till today of the Ripple for Napier and Gisborne. An Australian exchange states that the Huddart-P.arkor steamer Werribee was digpatchei from San Francisco on November I for Wellington and Sydncty. Port should bo made about the end of this month. With a fiill load of coal the Scales chartered steamer Hebburn arrived at Lyttelton from Newcastle yesterday morning. On completion of discharge the Hobburn will load wool at New Zealand ports for Home. On account of yesterday's bad. weather the departure of the Tainui for Waitara has been postponed till to-day. It is reported that the four-masted Echoner A. B.- Johnston lias been fixed to load timber at Gray's Harbour for New Zealand ports. After a delay at this port the C. and D. liner Star of Scotland was expected to sail for Napier and Gisborne at daybreak to-day. Sho will returii to Wellington about Tuesday next, ana will proceed \lien do to London.
