FIRST NIP OF WINTER

IN GALLIPOLI. Writing from a position threo miles distant from Anzac Covo, on September 13, Sapper Guy Little, of the Fifth. Reinforcements, says:—"The weather is breaking up now, and it is getting very cold at nights, with blustering days, something like our Wellington nor'westers. You can iust imagine the njess it makes of our little hole in the ground. \V« do not get much of a chance to mako things comfortable, as wo arc on tho move so often. I had a. very narrow escape from shell-lire the other day. The enemy got a gun into position, which commanded our little camp, and started letting us have it as fast as they could send them in. They killed four men and wounded several, besides settling nine mules. Two of the shells exploded within 10ft. of my dug-out, so I shifted. Wo eventually all had to get out nf it and shelter behind a hill until they ceased tiring. Ono of our batteries must have made them shift, for since then we have heard no more from tliem. Thoy can, however, get within about 200 yards l of us, and they amuse themselves by shelling round about us pretty well all day with varying luck. . . . Last night wo had tho first rain since I have been here (ono month), and wo got Dretty wet; having left things to tho last wo were caught. This morning my mate and I went out looking for timber to make our dug-out fit to stand the wet weatlier. x En route we had a swim, but, of course,'the Turks had to have a pot at us. It is very awlnvard sitting naked on your haunches behind a sandhill with the bullets flying round, whilst you try to dry yourself. A lot of our chaps are going away for a rest in a few days. Of course the Fifth Reinforcements will stav behind."
