CITY CRICKET

CENTRAL DEFEATED BY EAST

M'GIRR'S GOOD PERFORMANCE

The senior criclot championship matches were continued on Saturday afternoon. Tho matches played on the Basin Reserve were those between East ami Central and Old Boys and University, both rf .which-'had been coninienced r on the previous Saturday. The .results'were in favour "of East and Old Boys. East defeated Central by 73 runs on tho' first innings, and Old Boys outclassed University, and won ;by an innings and 166 runs. East's win was in a great measure due to tho good all-round performance of Jl'Girr. In' Central's first innings ho took six wickets' for 43 runs. In Ms first striko ho knocked off 45 runs (top score), and in his second iiinings his 65 was the only ■score of any size, and, probably,'it saved the team. When Central went in for their second innings they required to get a couple of hundred in the hour at their disposal. Their case, of course, was hopeless. M'Cardell batted well and freely, and indulged in a little hitting now and then. Three successive balls* in one over he pasted for four, six, and three'respectively. At '43 another of his intended boundaries fell into the bands if Midlane. One of the-features of the Central team's work was the good bowling of A. Wilson. When Old Boys resumed their innings against University the men at. the crease were Eonaldson and Thomas. Thomas wont out for 26, and the next man, Christie, were still, unbeaten, with their individual scores at 33 ana' 40, when the innings was declared closed with.'eight wickets down for 283. Christie, a.new'colt to 6eniorplay, has done w.ell. His three innings since the season commenced leave him with'an average ol 73. the details of which are 27, i 6 not out,, end 40 not out.' University \ had only' eigM; men available with;whom to bat thoir second innings, and they, all did poorly except Duncan,'who went in last, and banged, the bowling- about in quite proper fashion. l A surprise was caused at Petone by the local team suffering defeat at the hand 6 of Wellington North. On last week's play Petone hoped for at least a two-point win, but they sustained a loss, scoring altogether 198 runs against North's 209.
