WINTER CAMPAIGN
BETTER QUARTERS IN GALHPOLI.
According to a letter dated September t +n ieCol | V ,^ rom Staff-Sergeant Keith Little, tho big advance in August gamed for the Allies about three times the territory they held before. Ho states that there is 110 doubt that the Now Zealand forces did wonderful work. "The winter arrangements are now being made, writes _ Sergeant Little, "and matters are being made as comfortable for the men as conditions permit. The ordinary dug-out would be well-nigh untenable in the winter, so everyone is to receive better accommodation. ,This place (Anzao) grows more like a village ovory day. You only want to land here to realise what handling an army means. There is a place for everything. Several substantial piers have been constructed, which greatly facilitate landing operar. tions. With the limited stretch of flat country at our disposal, we have been able to construct something like a road —a road which only a mule can. traverse. Horses could not draw the wagons as the mules do. . . . Wo have a covering fleet (proof against submarine attacks), and when necessary they serve out shell in a manner that must be demoralising to the enemy. The troops are being well fed and well clothed. Rations include bread, fresh meat, jam, biscuits, rice, dried fruits, vegetables, milk, etc. What tlicy would appreciate e xt In w ' u^cr would be a supply of Aew Zealand butter and cheese. That would be impossible to supply without enormous wastage in the summer, but it should be feasible enough during the cold season."
