GREECE AND THE ALLIES
STRIKING MANIFESTO BY ATHENS SOCIALISTS.
By his advocacy of tho cause of tho Entente Powers in the war (says the "•Daily News" of September 3), M. Drakoulis, tho Greek Socialist leader alienated the. sympathy of many Balkan {socialists, and in. Athens he found determined opposition on the part of tho Greek Socialist Party, of which lie is tho founder. When his opinion that Greece should abandon neutrality and sipport tho causo of the Allies was made known, t'ho Exccutivo in May last issued a mnifesto in favour of Greek neutrality, at tlio same time waging a fierco campaign against M. Drakoulis. The result was a split in the Greek k/ucialist movement. Tho majority of Socialists, however, accepted the views or M. Drakoulis, and tno recalcitrant Executive has now been replaced by a new one, which last week issued a manifesto pointing out the reasons why Hellenism as well as Socialism would have nothing .to gain, but everything to lose, in the event of a German victory or premature peace. . The manifesto is in the form of a warm appeal to Socialists and others to press on tho Government the necessity of abandoning neutrality at onco, and siding with tho Entente Powers, which, to use the, words of the manifesto, ■ 'represent the democratic spirit, and which, nearly a century ago, crowning the'ten years' strugglo of Greece, put an end to Turkish rule."
