THE EIGHTH.

' fr— GOVERNORS INSPECTION

FINE SPECTACLE AT TRENTHAM TO-MORROWS PARADE Tho dull; threatening weather, with mists blowing along tho hill-tops, which prevailed yesterday afternoon, did not prevent several hundreds of the relatives and friends of the Eighth Reinforcements from visiting Trentham Damp, to .witness the review of tho troops by His Excellency Lord Liverpool. On arriving at the camp, tho visitors found that the soldiers had been paraded, all wearing their overcoats, and were awaiting the hour appointed for His Excellency's arrival. A Scotch mist was blowing across tho parade ground, and the masses of khaki harmonised so well with tho grey, ness of the landscape that it seemed as though they had but to march a little way into the mists, and tliey would disappear from sight altogether. But tliere were two stronger lines of colour which oaught the eye; one was the. line of sunburnt faces, and the other the colours on the hat puggarees of the men. Drawn up in companies before the saluting base were mounted men, artillery, infantry, and men of the Army Medical Corps. The Army Service Corps men were not on parade, being. still engaged in their duties at Tauherenikau. Someone among the speotators expressed the thoughts of all present in the words: "What a pity it is not a sunny day!" Yet there was something fascinating in the sight of the sombre-hued ranks waiting there in the soft, misty drizzle. Bank upon rank, company after company, nearly 3000 men were there. Arrival of the Covernor. At a few minutes before three o'clock, His Excellency arrived by motor-car, and was met by the Camp Commandant (Lieutenant-Colonel Potter), Colonel Gibbon, C.G.S., Captain Dovoy, Camp Adjutant, Captain Oar-da-11, Major M'Donald, and Captain Bradley. As the Governor, in uniform, and attended by these officers, approached tho saluting base, ,• which .was marked by two small flags, Major Ross, Officer Commanding the Bth Reinforcements, gave the order, "Attention!" There was a sudden stiffening of the ranks of khaki. "Slope arms!" The bayonets gleamed dully as they leaped, like one blade, to the shoulders. For an instant they remained there. Then, as His Excellency reached tho saluting base, the orders came: "Royal salute I Present arms!" The Trentham Camp Band, stationed at the rear of the roops, played tho National Anthem,, and the heads of the male portion of the onlookers were bared to tho rain. "Slope arms! Order arms! Stand easy!" ' These orders were given in quick succession, and His Excellency, accompanied by . the officers, with drawn swords, began his inspection, -while the band played slow, sweet music. As he approached each company tho men came 1 to attention, and tlie officer commanding saluted and accompanied the Governor on his inspection of that company. It was a thorough inspection, yet no time was wasted. At its conclusion the Governor returned to the saluting base. The band moved to the end of the lines, where tho mounted infantry were. The drums beat, and at tho word tho troops moved off, led by the band, to wheel round and march past the saluting base. t The March Past. Tho Mounted Infantry, under Captain Armstrong, camo first, as being cno senior arm. They struct the spectator as being a big and hardy lot of men, and tho gleam of their spurs as tliey marched had' a striking and peculiar effect. The artillery, under Lieutenant Earnshaw, came next. They carried no rifles, and tliey. seemed, if ■anything, even bigger and burlier than the mounted men. They were followed by the Engineers, under Lieutenant Williams, and then came the infantry, the veterans of the big route march. There was a murmur of approval from the crowd, and a,- man said to his neighbour: "The footsloggers! Can't they march ?" Captain Bishop, of E Company, was afc their head, and they certainly marched well. The only wavering noticeable in tho line was in the ranks opposite tho saluting base, where every man, as lie passed, turned his eyes towards the Governor. The rough ground, sometimes, caught a man unawares, while his eyes were turned from it, and made him sway a littlo. Otherwise the pacing feet and swinging arms moved like machinery, and the shouldered rifles and bayonets lay all at tho same angle. The men of the Army Medical Corps brought up the rear,., as tho men marched back to their quarters. After the inspection, of tho troops His Excellency, [ accompanied by the Camp Commandant, , inspected the camp. Tho Eighth Reinforcements will en- ! train at Trentham to-morrow morning, ; and will march through the City in the aftornoon before embarking for • Christcliurch. The general opinion exI pressed by officers of the Camp Headquarters Staff is that three troops arc as good in physique, discipline, and training as the best that Save left the camp. "The Fifths have always been regarded as our best lot," one man said, "and the Eighths are as good in my opinion." I " A FINE BODY OF MEN " t f VISIT OF THE DEFENCE MINISTER 0 "The Eighth Reinforcements are f . very fine body of men," said the Min ister of Defence (the Hon. J. Allen) las' evening. "I'cannot say that in som< ® partibulars they are better than force: that have gone before them, but eacl force has its peculiar characteristics Hie Seventh were a very handy lot; the; had been made handy by the difficultiei r that tlie.v had faced and overcome. Thi U Fifth were perhaps tho best all-rouni lot we have sent away, and their mus lietr.y constitutes a record. But ther< is one company of tho feighth that ha beaten, the record for musketry. "The Eighth are quite up to the big] standard set by our reinforcements, am iu some respects are beyond it. I an t quite sure Now Zealand can be ver; '1 proud of them, and that they will giv n a splendid account of themselves where e ever they go." id APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS FULL LIST The following appointments of officer to the New Zealand Expeditionary Fore t (Bth Reinforcements) with tho rank specified, and with effect from Novell , ber 1, 1915. havo been approved:— il h MOUNTED RIFLES.
