CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL,
Tho fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were also present: Councillors It. A. Wright-, ,A'. it. Atkinson, C. Frost,- J. Hutcheson, T. Bush, W. T. Hildreth, W. 11. Bennett, A.Veitch, J, E. Fitzgerald, M F. Luckie, W. H. 1\ Uarber, L. M'Kenzie, J. Uodber. It was resolved that tile council should ivait upon tho Minister in charge of the Post and Telegraph Department to make representations to sccure a reasonable system of operation by the. Department in the matter of laying , underground telephone ducts. The Finance and Property Committee recommended, and it was decided, that tho land required to rectify the faulty alignment of Constable Street should be taken under the Public Works Act, as recommended. Work to the value of £66 is to be done by the council in putting Onslow Terrace in order, provided that tho owner of property concerned spends a like amount. A contribution of £4 per month towards the cost of lighting the soldiers' club room, Sydney Street, was decided oil. It was decided to inform the Hataitai Land Company that the council will l« prepared to extend the public sewer to provide facilities for the drainage of their new subdivision at To Anau ltoad, Hataitai, if the company lodges the sum of £150, which sum will be returned to tho company after five houses have been erected and connected to the sewer in accordance with tho city regulations. A request from the Hataitai Electors'Association was considered by the Tramways Committee, and the committee recommended that the association should bo informed that the council could not see their way to accede to the association's request to either reduce the faro charged on the Kilbirnie route on Sunday mornings from 6d. return to 2d. return, or discontinue the Sunday morning service on this line altogether. In this conncotion, the committee pointed out that 6d. is the minimum charge for any distance on all other Sunday morning cars, and that the majority of passengers using the Kilbirnie cars on Sunday mornings are not Hataitai residents, but people outward bound from tho cit-y.
