NOTES. AND COMMENTS » (BY '-3I,E:;co?.1 The New Zealand Cup Meeting will bo continued at Eiccarton to-day, when the Canterbury Cup and New Zealand Oaks will be decided. The acceptances are up to the standard, and another successful day should result. In the Canterbury Cup both Snub and Warstop will oppose Balboa and Indigo. The weight will suit the three-year-old, who will only have to carry 7st. 3lb.,"aud probably Warstep will be runner-up. Another hot order will be Desert Gold in the Oaks.. In to-day's race, Nones will be without the assistance of anything to go out in the first part and worry Desert Gold. In the ISuburban Hurdles Hikakaheke should strip a greatly improved horse, as on Monday, when he shaped so well, he was making his first public' appearance over fences. Naupata will meet him on 91b. better terms, and this should be in favour of tho Porirua horse, who is a great jumper. .'Nystad will meet tho Welcome Stakes winner Sweat Tippcrary on a stone better terms in .the Spring Nursery, and this should bring the pair together, as tho Highdec'' horse was not fortunate at tho - barrier on tho opening day. T. Quiuli van's stable shelters a likely paif in Maorilander and Sasanof.. In the Avon Welter Handicap the biggest field of the day is engaged. Despite the size of the field the public may send Botanist out as the choice. The full brother to ileatherbrae is making his first tipprarant'c ill the meeting, but his last outing was at Trentham, where ho won with 9st. Gib. in the saddle. The locally-owned Taringamutrr has 7st. 7lb. in the Jockey Club Handicap, which is only lib. more than she scored with in tho Pearco Handicap at Trentham. She is to bo ridden by C. Emerson. Flving Start, runner-up to First Glance in"the Criterion Handicap, may come in for support, but' the chances of the topweight, Chortle, .must he held in respect. Form points to Taringamutu being prominent at the business end, Another bis Held is carded for JJjls Ruu.

Multiply, No. 1 in tTio Otaio Plate, is very sore in front, and Montana, who is on the same mark, is an unlikely starter. Tho distance seenitf to bo beyond Goldstream, and the Australian-bred Mountain Dream, who is a fine-looking mare, should be prominent at the fimsh. In the Takapuna Jockey Club nominations the appearance of the'Jiames of a couple of the Hon; J. D. Ormond's horses marks the first occasion on which the Hawke's Bay sportsman has patronised the suburban olub. ! Tho mishap to Appin, when he fell in the Onehunga Steeplechase on Wednesday last, proved to be more serious than .was at first anticipated, and as there was no chance of his ultimate recovery, he was destroyed by jlr. Alder. One trainer of a two-year-old which competed in tho A.R.C. Welcomo Stakes on Saturday has been holding his charge out on the tracks at headquarters, under the impression that he had got hold of a world-beater (says "Whalebone"' in the Auckland "Star"). , In the race, however, the youngster failed to make any showing, and did not hit out with, any freedom, probably under the impression that it had to act the same way as it was made to in its gallops. There is such a thing as being too shrewd. Sweet Tipperary, who secured .£7OO in prize-money by her win in tho C.J.C. Wolcoine Slakes, was purchased by Messrs. Dwan Bros, in March last for 50 guineas. Sho is tho first foal of her dam, GoldenBall, who is by Gold Reef from Pearl Shot.

Tangihou, mmier of tlie New Zoalaiul Clip; was bred by Mr. J. B. Reid, at Eldcrslio. Ho is the second St. Ambrose to win the Cup, Sinapis being the other. Tangihou was foaled in 1907, so is now eight years old, probably tlio oldest' New Zealand Cup winner on record. As a yearling he cost the late Afr. J.-R. M'Donald tlio modost sum of 80 guineas, and it is a remarkable turn of fortune's wheel thai; has given Mr. Lindsay H'Donnld such a big prize as tlio New Zealand Cup in his first season as aa ownei; in open company.
