AMERICA'S NOTE TO BRITAIN
NOT A "• DOLLAR" PROTEST Br Teleer&ph—Press Association—Copyright Y/ashington, November 8. The American Press generally approves of the text of the American Note to Britain ou the subject of alleged trade interference. Its languago denouncing Britain's action as ineffective, illegal, and indefensible is declared to be warranted by the extent to which American trade to Europe has been arbitrarily stopped ill British waters. Most of the newspapors point out that the pro-Germans now cannot accuse America of pro-British leanings. America, is not inspired purely by the love of dollars. Other papers say there is but a genuine desire to'uphold neutral rights. A MIGHTY SERIOUS CHARGE. (Rec. November 9, 0.45 p.m.) New York, November 8. The "Baltimore American" saysi—• "Britain has not indulged in any murderous work, but has destroyed millions of dollars' worth of American property. This is the gravest charge we can bring against her, but it is a mighty serious charge, and may endanger the friendship of the two great English-speaking nations." (Rec. November 9, 5.50 p.m.) New York, November 8. The "New York Herald" says:— ''While dealing with shipping it is pertinent to ask: Was not there ouce a steamship named the Lusitania? What reparation has Germany made for the wanton murder of the American passengers who were on board? Does Washington imagine that the Americans are'more concerned about the products of the Beef Trust than the lives of our citizens?" The German newspapers in New York, Chicago, and Milwaukee, consider that the Note lacks determination, and fear that it will be ignored. OUR RIGHT TO STRANGLE THE PIRATES. (Rec. November 10, 1.5 a.m.) London, November 8. The "Pall Mall Gazette" says:—"To resign any portion of our ability to strangle the commerce of a pirate enemy out of. a defence of technical arguments would be treasonable to our Allies and to the blood sacrifice of our own citizens." -
