THE TURF
C.J.C. MEETING
DERBY WON BY DESERT GOLD
INDIGO'S METROPOLITAN, (From Our Special Correspondent.) ' „ Christchurch, November 8. JJ.e Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting was continued to-day. Ihe totalisator handled .£39,81)3, as compared with J!37,G!)2 10s. on tho second day last .tear. , The .general opinion was that the Hurdles was a good thing for the Porirua hoi'se Naupata, but he was never dangerous, as the two Ormond-owiied horses set a very fast pace, and tho others wero never able to go with them. Cyra fell at the first fence, and Crib and Naupata turned over at the back ot' tho c.ourse. Master Hamilton endeavoured to run. to the leader at the last quarter, but ho had-no chance. Ridden right out, Vascular, who has been a big disappointment in the past, just, won from Hikahakeke. Master Hamilton was six lengths away. Menowl was the only other to finish. Ihe favourite, Firet Glance, won tho Criterion Handicap in good style, while 1 lying btart beat Tete-a-tete lor second place in tho last stride. The black mare was the quickest to begin, and led from Pursefiller into the straight, where the hold spread dut wide. Flying Start and Lncoro on the fence began to show up a furlong from horn*;, but the Maniopoto gelding could not hold this position. Chakwana and Chortle, who had been in the middle bunch, finished on well, just behind: the placed horses. ' The bottom weights wero well beaten. _ A light shower fell, just before the lrwell Handicap was run, .and continued during-the race. Hyttus was a very strong order,' but once more he was unlucky at the barrier. He was soon in front, but over the last bit he failed to withstand a strong challenge from ICillena, An outsider in Susanoff beat. Winterbourne in the last stride' for third place. Satan a was: a trillo sore, and did not show up, and Thestius jumped back when the barrier rose. The winner is the first of JCilbroney's stock to score. Adjutanf was withdrawn from the Derby, leaving five runners. Desert Gold started the. hottest order of the meeting, and she led throughout, after being a trifle lucky at the barrier. Xanthos tried to'go with, her, but at six furlongs he had had enough, and shortly afterwards Nones got up on the inside of him, but no effort of Deeley's could reduce tho gap, and over tho last half furlong Nones had to be hard ridden to hold oil Snub, who is a sticker, aiid will do better in the Canterbury Cup. Battle Eve and Xauthos wore beaten off. The first hnlfmila was run under 50sec., the five furlongs lmin. 2sec., the six in lmin. 15 l-ssec., and the mile in lmin. 51sec. The full distance was officially posted as 2min. 34 l-ssec., but several watchers made it faster. Mrs. C. G. Dalgety, wife of the president, decorated the winner, who was cheered .vociferously. This is Mr. T. H. Lowry's second Derby, Balboa having scored for hini last year. Another hot one in Three prevailed in the Juvenile Plate, but he was worried the whole way by the two-year-old Egypt, and after a good finish won by a head. Sweet Corn was a head clear of Tho Toff. Hyginas ran badly, and on this form was lucky to finish in front of Three at Trenthain.' ■ The Metropolitan Handicap wa9 a spjondid race. Montana and Balboa divided the machine honours, and the latter ran a great race, considering it waa his first outing, but Montana had all the bad luck, and was then close up'at .the finish. Goldstteam led for ten furlongs from Balboa and Blackall, but in the straight Indigo got through, and though challenged by Rinaldo, ho fiuished strongly.. Blackall, Balboa, and Montana finished in that order. A heavy shower was falling when the Epsom High-weight Handicap was run, and it whs'difficult to pick up the colours. Fabrikoff and Kaminohe were prominent to the turn, where His Ernin. ence rushed -through and won in good style from Gold Soult, who was well clear of' Teviotdale and Sartorze. The winner is. good-in soft going, and scored at Napier in the winter. Ai-other turn-up took place in the last race, ill which Findhorn . unexpectedly won from Sir -another*outsider. The Tre'ntham candidate, Rumania, was a good third, after a passage that was anything but good. Thaddeus., the favourite, failed badly. THE RESULTS. • By Telozraph.—Press Association.
