•The Rev. Father M'Menamin, of Petone, who returned from tho front recently, .is ill, and tho state of his liealth is causing anxiety. A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that a cablegram has been received from Lance-Corporal Poland Benjamin, wlio was one of the survivors from the transport Marquette. The messago stated that iie was safe and well, but tho name of tiic place from which the cablegram was sent was erased, apparently by the censor. Mr. Herbert Humphries, of Napier, with the Misses Vera and Cara Humphries, returned to New Zealand by the s.s. Manuka yesterday, after visiting tho San Francisco Exhibition and some of the principal Ainorican cities and England. The Rev. Father Dore, who was wounded on Gallipoli, is reported to be jecovcriug slowly. Private Clarence Dornford Thompson, who is reported as missing, and is supposed to havo been drowned in the sinking of the transport Marquette, was a member of tho first contingent to Samoa, at the outbreak of the war. He enlisted as a- member of the ambulance section of tho Army Medical Corps, and 011 his return to New Zealand immediately went into camp again, and left with the No. 1 Ha so Hospital. The late. Private Thompson was a soil of Mr. Harry Thompson, of Upper Moutere, Nelson, and a grandson of tho late Mr. T. J. Thompson, of "Headingley," Richmond, who was in his day one of Nelson's bestknown pioneer sot'tlers. Before enlisting Private Thompson was on tho staff of the Audit Department in Wellington. He was a keen sport, and took part in athletics generally here. He was a great walker, and there were few places round about Wellington which he had not explored during the time bo was resident here. Mr. A. organiser for the Political Reform League, arrived back from a three months' visit to Australia by tho Manuka yesterday. Mr. Wilson Twentyman, one of tho oldest settlers in the Hukanui district, Wairaxapa, died on Saturday, aged 74. Tho deceased is survived by the widow, two sons, and one daughter. One of tho sons went to the iront with tho Main Expeditionary Force. Tho death occurred at Lansdowne yesterday morning of Mr. Walter Harris, aged 7S. Tho late Mr. Harris with his parents and brothers first resided in tho Hutt district. He subsequently took up a farm at Opaki, which ho occupied until his retirement n fow years ago. Ho took an activo interest in the work of local bodies, and was for a period a member of tho Mastorton County Council. Tho deceased leaves a grown-up family. Tho death took place at Manly on October 28 of Mr. Syd. Day. tho wellknown printer and from meningitis. Deceased, who was 47 years of age, was, says an Australian paper, at one time the holder of records for motor travelling botween Sydney and Melbourne, and between Melbourne and Adelaide. Recently 110 purchased "Tho Theatre" and "The Lone Hand" magazine. Ho was tho best-known art poster printer in Australasia, and was as well known in Sydney and Melbourne as the Mayors of those cities. A Press Association message from Timaru states that Mr. 11. C!. Hill lias resigned the. position of general manager of tho Bristol and Dominions Producers' Association, which he has held since the institution of_ the company. At present Mr. Hill is on holiday leave in the south. Visitors staying at the Albert Hotel aro: Mr. and Mrs. Alsace, of Sydney; Mr. J- E. Leaning and Mr. J. Hodgson, of Auckland; Mr. E. A. Burke, of Greymouth; and Mr. C. Wyett, of Greytown.
