A British lira has bought the 6tcamer Haupiri from the TJnion Company, after having been laid np in the stream at Wellington for some considerable time; She is expcctcd to be. ready for sea shortly. Built at Dundee in 1885 by Gourlejr Bros, and Co., the vessel was first christened Richmond. Under that name she came out Jo New Zealand, and was engaged In th< service between Auckland, the Tongan croup, and the Eastern Pacific Islands for her owner (Mr. Donald Edenborough, of Auckland). She was one of the first boats to bring fruit to New Zealand from the Islands. About 1890 she was sold to the Union Company, and received her new name. Some thirteen years ago the Haupiri established a record by running for twelve months in the Wellington-Grcy-mouth paesenger service, under the command of Captain Nordstrum, without missing a single day of her time-table. Later the Haupiri was utilised for the East Coast cargo trade, but a few years ago she was taken off the servioe, and brought'to Wellington, where she has been used practically as a store ship or lighter ever emee. She is a veEeel of 715 tons gross. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. W. J. Wnehbourne, wireless operator on the Arahura, has left that vessel. Mr. H. Whitefield, late of the Paloona, has joined the Tarawera as second officer in place of Mr. T. W. Banks, who has joined the Reinforcements. Mr, W. Richardson, purser of the Wanaka, has gone to Dunedin for orders. Captain E. J, M. Appleyard, late chief officer of the Aorangi, is now in charge of the steamer Pawattoh, which is at present bound from New York to New Zealand. Five hours late, the Nikau arrived at Wellington from Nelson on Saturday. She had been delayed by the heavy storm in Cook Strait. Although tho passengers suffered some discomfort, the little vessel rode the storm out well. Tho Shaw-Savill liner Karamea was docked at Port Chalmers last week prior to loading for London. Although the Maori proceeded to Lyttelton on> Friday night with t/wo .boilers short, and despite the southerly storm, sho managed to arrive at her destination at 9.55 a.m. on Saturday. Am arrival in port from London, vis, Australian ports. Auckland, and Napier, yesterday morning was the 0. and D. liner Star of Scotland. Home cargo will be discharged this morning. ' ■ The local office of the F. and S. Line expect their chartered steamer Orarl to arrive at Wellington from Liverpool, via way ports, on Friday next. The Manuka (from Sydney) is expected to arrive early this afternoon. She will berth at the Queen's Wharf to land 178 passengers and 792 tons of cargo. Continuing her journey from New Zealand ports, the Shaw, SaviU liner Matatua cleared Melbourne on Thursday last for London. She is due there about December 19.

The New Zealand- Shipping Company's Turakina sailed lor Auckland on Saturday morning to complete loading for Home. Sho should get away towards the end of tho week.

It waa 6.45 p.m. on Saturday before the Moeraki got away for Sydney and Hobart —two days late. The delay was occasioned by the vessel's late arrival hero from Sydney last week, and also the large amount of cargo which had to be handled.

New Plymouth cargo will be shipped at Wellington by the Kowhai to-morrow. Prior to leaving this port for Boston and New York yesterday morning, the Donuarra loaded 1003 bales of hemp and 55 bales of tow, consigned to Boston.

Before proojwling on to northern ports to-day, the Paloona will land 370 tons of southern cargo here.
