1 It is arguable (says an. English newspaper) whofchor the part of the Danube which is particularly interesting just now should be called the Danube at all. For on the map it certainly looks as if at Belgrade the Danube flows into the Save, not the Save into the Danube. Accordingly we find that the ancient Romans called the river this point the Danube, but below it tbo later —Istria being the region in which the head-waters of the Save are to he found. The name of the Danube itself has.been variously derived from the German "Dormer" (thunder) and "Tanne" (fir tree), and from Celtic, sources.
