NEW ZEALAND CUP

WON BY TANGIHOU

SWEET TIPPERARY WINS WELCOME STAKES

STEWARDS'. HANDICAP WON

BY CROESUS

(Bj Telegrarh—Speoial EepoitoM Christchurch, November 6. For the first day's: events of the Canterbury Jockey. Club's Metropolitan Meeting the weather was beautifully fine, and there was a largo and representative attendance from all parta of the Dominion. The -initial event provided a very fine' finish between three' well-backed horses— Moddibs. Art, and Naupata. Tho lastaiamed looked like a winner at tho la6t fence, but he .failed in the run home. Moddite, who showed a surprising reversal of form"; compared'with"that of a few weeks •back, won cleverly by half a length, with. Art a head in -front of Naupata. Crib and Tararua Jack were- the next to finish. Parewamii made the early running, • but ho, stopped badly at the end of a mile, and the Anoklander, Tararua Jack, took charge, but with another three furlongs gone he, too, was in trouble. Naupata then; led to the last fence, where the others closed up, and an interesting finish took place. Wormald, rider of-the winner, was fined ,£lO for boring Art, Naupata pulled up badly. The Trentham-trained Seadown was a. good favourite in'the Spring Plate, with Dribble next choice. The latter got away last, and did well to finish third after going, round the field. Down led till well into the straight when the field cldsed up, and a great struggle oyer tho last furlong resulted in a victory for Seddul Bahr, who got a. bad run in the early, part, but later got through on tho fence. He just beat Welcome Nugget, who waa a neck in front of Dribble, while Two Lights was in a line with tho latter. FinAhorn was prominent early, but faded at. the finish, aa did Down. Seadown ran, badly, and evidently does not stay. Rumania ran a great race for seven fnrlongs, but the Cup candidates, Ardenvohr and' Marc .Antonj, ran badly. •' Dribble was galloped on in the straight. i The Welter went to ,the consistent Meltchikoff, who took charge at the bottom of the straight, and after resisting several strong, challenges, won- by a neck from Countess Tolstoi, who was badly placed early, but finished well. Multum in Parvo ran a good race, and 100 yds. off the post looked like winning, but she failed to struggle'on. Slogan was also dangerous a furlong .from, home, and finished fourth. Mountain Dream stripped well, and will surely catch the judge's eye at the meeting. Immer led for half a'!mile, but then faded back, and finished last. ■ Kaminohe was unlucky at the barrier, and tho favourite Battle Eve, after showing: up well for six furlongs, then went back. • ~

' - Snub; Specialform, .Marc Anthony, and 'Ardenvohr wei'e withdrawn from the Cup etai-ters, lcaving iiiiiO Tiinnors. The fiela stripped well, particularly. Indigo, Goldstream, Waistep, and Tangihou. Sinapis was above herself,, and Multiply moved sorely. On the machine Indigo and Waretop had a big Call over the others, and the i Hawke's Bay representative started favourite. There was a slight'delay at the barrier; but;at the start all but Indigo' and Tangihou moved off- well. Goldstream and Warstep led a bunched field past the stand, .with the favourite. Biaokaill, and Einaldo prominent.' Goldetream gave way to the top-weight at the mile, where Indigo , and Einaldo were lhandy, and Midnight Star moved up, followed by Tangihou. Warstep led fnnn ißiialdo around, the big bend, while Indigo vras nest on the/fence. In.the straight the topweighit was going .well, but shortly afterwards Midnight Star challenged,''and Jones (ailed on the mare. Einaldo was •fhen tiring, and Tangihou came up fast on the .outside, and over;~tho last furlong) the (issue was not'in>doubt. Indigo-momentarily-looked dangerous, but Blackall and Multiply came up on the outside, and the big hoTse finished second, by a Qiead. . Waastep, Indigo, and Midnight Star , were' in a line, and then , came Einaldo and Sinapis, with Goldstream last.'- : ■

The \Cup • winner was ridden by G. Clarke;, an .'apprentice of E. Mason's. He is owned by Mr. Lindsay M'Donald, a son of the . late Mr. J. R. M'Donald, of Levin. A. Attwood turned hisi charge out,in great condition, and" the aged son of St. Ambrose. won most convincingly. As far as cf-uld be judged, it was a clean run race, end the whole of the competitors had good Tuns, except Blackall, who" was 4 stopped .twice.-

The Cup time was slow, and does not speak well for the class engaged. Tho .winner got a great reception . from the orowd, with ■ whom the rider is very popular.

A. . good-looking lo't of two-year-olds came out for the Welcome Stakes. Tho Kararnu representative, Hyttus, was favourite, .but he. played up at the barrier and did not get out very well. ; At,tho start 'Sweet Tipperary on the outside moved off .best, and by ' the time the ooniSrt proper was entered she had come over to the rails. After this she was not headed, and won by three lengths from Koesian, who was a head in front of Egypt, with Thestius the same distance e-way. Then came Kilboyne'ahd Hyttus. Nystad gave trouble ait .the barrier, and did ritot show up in the race, but Swalq ran well, and is an improving, colt. The winner is owned By Dwan Bros., and was bred by Mr. G. P. Donnelly. Snapdragon had a very'easy win in tho Apprentices' Handicap, while Moidant filled second plitce, and' Teviotdale vwaa third. Next oame, Chirsotis and Scotch , Melody. Teviotdale and Ticino made tho early running but the latter tired badly ' and was the last to finish.

took a wide range in tho Stewards'. Handicap, for which - Tatterley was the only withdrawal. It was one' of the finest races seen on the course! and a furlong from home the field was spread across the track in a line. • Three. was showing out when they reached the course proper, while the colours of Hyginas wehs also prominont, as also were.Hushnbye's. Tete-a-tete challenged strongly ..on the fence, but Croesus came with a late run, and after a great finish, won by-a neck! 1 Teto-a-tet© v was half a length away, and then came First Glance and Bee. The latter was unlucky, and was'givine the loaders a big start at one 'part of Hie race.

Backets had .been having a bad time n? to this, and the majority of. them went for a recovery on Moutoa Queen and u i rnt°, had' every •ir j l 't, I'f Thad : lc,,s was unlucky, and f'U do tetter next time.
