IRISH EMIGRANTS
SLACKERS REFUSED BERTHS (Rec. November 8, 0.5 a.m.) London, November 7. There wore exciting scenes at Livers pool, when a large number of 1 Irish emigrants embarking on a Cunard liner were obliged to run the gauntlet of a t hooting crowd. Recruiting officers endeavoured to dissuade the emigrants, but none responded. Later, the emigrants assembled on the landing-stage. A number of the crew walked ashore, and told the Cunard Company that they refused to sail with men eligible for enlistment. The Irish firemen emphatically declared: "We don't see why we should stoke whilo slackere are allowed to run away." The Cunard Company forthwith decided not to take the emigrants. The decision was taken on the company's initiative, without outside instructions. and notice was issued thatuntil further advice it cannot accept bookings by British subjects fit and eligible for military service.
