MEMORIAL SERVICE

TO OUR LOST NURSES. At the Salvation Army Hall, Vivian Street, there was held last evening a most impressive memorial service for tho New Zealand nurses who were lost by tho siuking of the s.s. Marquette in tiie Aegean Sea on October 23. Tho meeting opened with tho entrance of the flags of the Allies, and also the Red Cross and Salvation Army flags, tho band meanwhile playing "For Those in Peril on the Sea." Representatives from the Reinforcements Camp at Trentham were present, as also was a deputation of nurses from the Salvation Army Nursing Home. Tho Hon. G. W. Russell (Minister of Internal Affairs) was also present, and in an inspiring address complimented the Salvation Army on being the first organisation to conduct a memorial servico for the brave nurses, and expressed tho hope that tho servico would be emulated in every church throughout tho Dominion. He also expressed his personal sympathy for tho relatives and friends of the deceased.

The baud then rendered the "Garland of Flowers" funeral march in thoir usual impressive manner, and during tho meeting short addresses were given by Mrs. Adjutant' Green, Mrs. Goffin, and Adjutant Bladin (the corps officer), who conducted the proceedings throughout.

Prior to the inside service, an openair gathering took place at Dixon Street corner, with a prooession headed by tho flags of the Allies and thirty young women with white sashes. Tho band played Handel's Funeral March in "Saul," and the procession was followed by a large concourse of people, who ultimately filled the Salvation Amy Citadel. Many hundreds were turned away, being unable to obtain admission.
