WAR DRAINING THE INTELLECTUAL LIFE OF GERMANY.
''Tho war is draining the intellectual lire of Germany," says.tho "Westminster Gazette." "The latest Prussian casualty list bears eloquent witness to the terrible ravages the war is making in the ranks of men who, in ordinary, times, hold important positions in the civil life of Germany. Wo find'in this list a doctor of philosophy from Jena University; a magistrate from Stuttgart and Schwelm; a doctor of law and a referee of law from Reinerz; a clergyman, a head toachor, a burgomaster, a doctor of jurisprudence, who was also a barrister: a dootor of philosophy, who was a teaclior in the town gymnasium in Dusseldorf; an architect, the son of a senator, tho chief teacher at a gymnasium in Breslau, an engineer, an assessor of tho Laud Court of Leipzig, a barristor from Luchow, a teaclior from Welten, and many representatives of leading commercial houses. The losses among professors and teachera havo been particularly heavy, and it would -be interesting to. know wlio carries on. their work. So true is it, aB tho Kaiser said, that there is no one iii Germany now but the soldier.
