NOTES AND COMMENTS

18l 'iLENCO?.!

To-day is entry day for the spring taeetmg of the Feilding .Jockey Club. Secretary .E. Goodbehoro 'will ' receive nominations up ti11'9.30 p.m. ; The Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will open' to-morrow, when the New Zealand Cup, Welcome Stakes, and Stewards' Handicap will be decided. Some very strong comments were made locally, when it was found that Nones was allowed to drop out of the Stewards' Handicap at the final payment. This, following on top of a,similar occurrence at Wanganui and Trentham has caused many heartburnings.

■No,fewer than. 26 horses have made the final payment for the Stewards' Handicap and several very smart sprinters are engaged. The best-liked locally are Bee (Deeley), Three (Emerson), and Hyginas (Buchanan), but the issue is noted very open, and a turn up may bo the result. Dribble, who scored at Trentham under Sst.'Slb., may go out favourite in the Spring Plate at Riccarton, in which she will only have to carry 7st. 21b. The Hastings mare is not built to carry weight, and 171bL oil her back will make a big difference,

The local horseman, W. O'Halloran, has been winning a lot of races in the south lately,, and critics there speak highly of his riding.. . Thero is a likelihood of Multoe going to Sydney shortly to race in tho pony ranks.

Another three-year-old ineligible scored in the City Handicap at Ellerslie. This draws attention to the fact that horses of this age are always hard to beat. The only three-year-old in tho New Zealand Cup with any claims to first-class form is Snub, winner of the Dunedin Guineas. In the south Snub has as many admirers for the big Riccarton event as his stable companion Warstep, but good judges express a preference for the top weight on account of the difficulty of getting a rider at 7st. to do justice to the three-year-old,' who is inclined to hang in his races. The acceptances for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting aro ■ very satisfactory, and to-morrow's Tacing should bo brim fulf of interest. Mr. C. G. Dalgety, who owns Warstep and Snub, is the only owner with two representatives. The machine will probably see the bracket sent but favourite, with Indigo and Rinaldo following in that order. The only notable defection from the New Zealand Cup' was John Barleycorn. The Sarto gelding was regarded as a certain runner, and his defection is hard to account for...

The following are the probablo startera and their riders in the New Zealand Cup, of 2000 sovs; two miles':—Mr. C. G. DalKoty's b. m. War3tep, syrs., -9st. 51b. (F. E. Jones); Mr. A. R. The form of Montana has been so impressive of late that if he saddled up for the Riccarton Welter he will command plenty of support, no is meeting Battle Eve on 51b. worse terms than at Trentham. but ho gave tho Cliokebore colt considerably more tliau a 51b. beating. Eligibje and Sweet Corn, in charge of their trainer (K. Quinlivan). left Auckland last night, and will nrrivo here this afternoon. They am to go south for the concluding-days at Riccarton.
